I haven't heard it in a long while, but GREW OWL is certainly a fine effort by Fenton, even if it is a bit underwhelming when compared to other scores of his that would described as being more developed and robust than this one is. It's a pleasant and very competent composition, but is not as flamboyant, nor as a aggressive as his standout score to BUFFALO BILL'S WILD WEST SHOW (which is a personal favorite of mine and that I continue to return to, time and time again).

Thanks for providing a thread for this film Joan. The film went literally nowhere, financially. It's now available at Amazon as well as Netflix. I sincerely believe this film contains Jessica Chastain's best work onscreen, thus far. Between herself and Michael Greyeyes, (Sitting Bull), I was completely taken out of my element and transported to the times and the world depicted in the film! As the credits rolled at films end, I was genuinely surprised to see 'Music by GEORGE FENTON. Lovely, lovely score that doesn't sound like anything I've heard Fenton compose for a film. Unfortunately, no soundtrack c.d. Still, it's great to have George Fenton composing again, even if hardly anyone has seen the film he worked so hard on, 'Woman Walks Ahead'.

The film went literally nowhere, financially.

Given that the film's entire Los Angeles run consisted of one week at the Arclight Santa Monica -- after the film had been available for streaming -- that's hardly a surprise. (it played during the one week this year when I was NOT in Los Angeles, so I missed it).

Weirdly enough, when you look at the film's website (as I did a few weeks ago), for its past engagements it lists pretty much every Laemmle Theater in the Los Angeles area, while it actually played at none of them.

Apologies to anyone who already read me harping on this in the "Catcher Was a Spy" thread, but it seems especially bizarre to me that a film starring an A-list actress (Jessica Chastain) and a brand-new Oscar winner (Sam Rockwell) should get such a marginal theatrical release, despite it's so-so reviews. And it's a WESTERN, a genre seemingly made for the big screen. Oy.

Sad to hear this movie didn't garner an audience. I will watch it on DVD and want to hear Fenton's music.

The tech-credits were first-rate too, I don't know why the film didn't even make back the cost of the lab work to produce the film. One of the Producers was Edward Zwick, the Director of 'Glory'. And one of the two film editors was Steven Rosenblum, the Oscar Nominated editor also from 'Glory'. Add to that Jessica Chastain and Sam Rockwell who just won his own Oscar. Perhaps it was the film title, however if you see the film, the title is EXACTLY correct.

Fenton has yet another feature coming out, the spy docudrama Red Joan, and since it stars Judi Dench maybe it will get a decent theatrical release in the U.S.

The Hollywood Reporter review says "George Fenton’s romantic score and Charlotte Walter's charming costumes well describe the mood of the time."

Regardless of the movies, I just want to see these things on a soundtrack album, dammit! 99% of Fenton stuff is ace in my book.
