Our Encore title this time sees the return of a score that has been out of print for almost thirty years. David Newman’s classic score for the cult classic original Heathers from 1989 is back!

It’s a dark film but it sure has its fans! David Newman’s score is one of his most popular. One of the great non-horror synth scores from the 80s!

Veronica (Winona Ryder) is part of the most popular clique at her high school, but she disapproves of the other girls' cruel behavior. When Veronica and her new boyfriend, J.D. (Christian Slater), confront clique leader Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) and accidentally poison her, they make it appear a suicide. Soon Veronica realizes that J.D. is intentionally killing students he does not like. She races to stop J.D. while also clashing with the clique's new leader, Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty).

Being the same year as Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, their breezy synth similarities are what make this quite a companion score for me.

Heather and Heather's Corn Nuts.

I have the 1989 CD, so I will not buy this. Nice score, my favorite Newman along with Fire Birds.

Posted my gratitude for Heathers in the Small Soldiers thread before this one was started. Great choice for an encore. Looking forward to this one!

I have the original release.
One of my all-time faves, and a score that really makes the movie.

This is a really interesting score… despite Heathers being a teen film, the only pop music in the film is the bubbly and intentionally ridiculous Big Fun song. The music, like the costumes, doesn't so much date the film today as sort of set it in its own universe, in a way that a more song-heavy soundtrack would not have.

The sound samples make it sound very similar to the original CD, but a bit louder.

Also, you know it’s not in chronological order when “Third Funeral” comes two tracks before “First Funeral!”

This is a really interesting score….

Josh, do you have any details on the instrumental line-up for this score? It's been years since I saw the film, but it was quite haunting and I remember the score as part of its distinct character. The sound was very evocative to that mid-to-late-1980s era. I'm not sure what it was about that, but the synths back then had a raw, electronic sound that in a way was quite primitive, except they were regarded as cutting edge. As somebody else noted in an earlier thread, from the style of the instrumentation I thought this was Thomas Newman, not David. Any info on the synths he used?

How much score is missing?

Songs, dont forget Syd Straw's cover of " Que Sera, Sera" for the main title.
Synths used? I'm sure a DX-7 was in there considering the budget, Newman's career to that point, and common usage. Not sure if the harmonica was live or not. Maybe a Prophet-5? Doesn't quite sound like Kurzweil to my ears. Synclavier? Maybe, super expensive system, however. I love how TD & Carpenter scores of the era show the gear used.

What's 'Dear Diary' from? Is it separated out from another track?
Otherwise you have 24 tracks here and the album is 23 tracks.

Oops, I should have mentioned… “Dear Diary” is the opening 28 seconds of “Strip Croquet.” It's the cue for the post-title sequence.

To my recollection, that is the only combined cue on the album.

I don't recall any music being missing from the album (aside from the Big Fun song and the versions of “Que Sera Sera”), but it has been a while since I have seen the film. There is a cue heard toward the end of the film when Veronica stalks J.D. in the high school that sounds like “Forest Chase,” I don't know if it is the same cue retracked, or a very similar arrangement that wasn't included on the album because it would have been redundant.

It would have been funny if Varese could have been able to add that Big Fun song as a hidden bonus track

That’s good to know the score is largely, perhaps entirely, complete!

Any liner notes on this new version? Shouldn't be too hard to get Newman and director Michael Lehmann to say a few words?

I tried the samples, just not my cup of tea. David Newman is maddening, because I either find his work amazingly energetic and epic or deadly dull lacking thematic direction.
