This British film aired recently on TCM. I think Dankworth's score is excellent and deserves a complete release. Dankworth recorded the main title for an LP entitled "Movies 'n' Me" (RCA LPL1-5092). I still listen to it occasionally.

The link below contains the main title. The music starts at about 2:35 in case you don't want to see the truly shocking opening sequence. This film out noirs film noir!

By the way, it's still available for a few more days if you have the "Watch TCM" app.

I'm in for any Dankworth release. Like Addison, Myers, and Barry he could expertly do both the British kitchen-sink dramas and the swinging London pop-jazz. Would love to hear what he did for Boom!

Always thought it was sad that the Mirisch company (THE PINK PANTHER, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, WEST SIDE STORY) did so little in archiving their musical heritage considering that music was such an important element to their product AND the United Artists label was THE most productive soundtrack label of it’s time.

Fascinating movie, especially in comparison to the excellent, recent remake, Phoenix.

And that pre-credits scene is a hell of a grabber.

Ha! I also watched this one just 2 days ago.
And even wanted to post about it in What's Your "Rocket Gibraltar"? thread - I really love main theme (discovered it years ago), plus, as I watch whole film for the first time, this time I happily discovered, that the rest score is in same mood.
So sad that we probably never see/hear this great music... frown

I'd love the see a CD release of ASHES with THE SERVANT. I saw ASHES on network TV when I was a kid; kinda freaked me out, but I couldn't stop watching!

I know nothing of this film and agree that the opening scene is shocking ... it leaves me wondering if there's more to it.

I also agree that the theme tune is wonderful (and yes, the 1960s was the decade of wonderful film themes) ... but, having read the opening caption stating it was winter 1945 I can't agree that the music is appropriate - it sounds far too modern for that era.

I shall keep an eye out for the film in the TV schedules since this has stirred my interest.

Yes, underrated and underrepresented on disc (his film work). Looking at Soundtrack Collector I noticed the same comps turning up again and again (both OP), and gray market stuff from one of the usual suspects.

I'd welcome anything from your list and others besides. LP programs, too!

Beautiful bit of music as you'd expect from Dankworth, but, tonally, it's slightly disastrous in context of the scene. Probably not his fault. It's a typical producers' kind of call, especially in that period. Just my opinion. I wonder how the rest of it works.

I'd love to see more Dankworth released too. He, Richard Rodney Bennett and John Barry had British film music sewn up in the 60s, and the scores were superb, but so little of Dankworth's work is available properly now.

Thanks to Erik for calling this out, watched it last night through TCM on demand. I was a little disappointed at some of the turns it eventually took, which I'm guessing we're disprovements of the source novel, but Maximillian Schell in particular pulled it off. And Herbet Lom! Always a reason to watch a movie, in my book. Dankworth's music worked much better in the film overall than the opening credits might suggest. I'd buy it if it appears one day.

And thanks to Scott for calling out the remake, Phoenix. Watched the trailer right after, and it's on the list.

Most helpful thread of the week, for me.

This is the same program as the RCA LP I mentioned above. It's a great album well worth seeking out.

The theme from Return From the Ashes is also available on Vocalion's CD reissue of Movies 'n Me from 2010, shortly after Dankworth's death. Doesn't appear to be on Vocalion's site now.
It also featured in the 2009 compilation double CD "Let's Slip Away - Soundtracks and Themes 1960 - 1973" issued by UMG on the Eclipse label.
Both are terrific collections and must haves for any serious fan of Dankworth's music.

I totally agree. The score is completely wrong for the film! It needed something less jazzy and more appropriate to the darker story being told.

I wonder what Delerue would have done with it.

It's funny but, when I saw the film, it never occurred to me that the style of the main title theme was inappropriate. I just went with the flow and thought the theme was consistent with the emotional barrenness of the lady who remained oblivious when the little boy fell out of the train in the opening sequence.

As another poster commented, the score fits the rest of this suspense film very well. I agree. Chacun à son gout.
