Trevor Jones adventure masterpiece gets greatly-expanded 2-CD treatment! Ferdinand Fairfax directs rousing pirate swashbuckler, Tommy Lee Jones, Michael O’Keefe play titular roles with plenty of sword-wielding pizzazz, Jenny Seagrove offers romantic interest, Max Phipps & Grant Tilly provide sinister conflict, Paramount Pictures presents. Trevor Jones adds to legendary pantheon of nautical period adventure scores with colorful seafaring symphonic score of his own! Anchored by sweeping main theme, first heard in fragments during lengthy opening sequence then in full for initial action sequence (“Escape From Mumi Village Pt. 1”), this bright energetic idea balances major harmonies with minor, moves at a rapid pace and literally sails with the wind! Jones also offers a warm love theme, also unfurling with a degree of forward motion, which serves as both music for romantic scenes and as the “B” theme in the midst of the primary theme. Jones also devotes significant attention to lively, rhythmic action material with emphasis on jagged, aggressive rhythms in the brass. Following his success with The Dark Crystal, composer Jones brings huge scope to his dynamic score with rich melody, accessible harmony and thundering action. Lively stuff! A previous album was made available, providing 40-minutes of well-chosen highlights. Jones scored almost 80-minutes of music plus another 15 minutes of additional alternate and source material. Intrada presents all of it, dividing it between the 79-minute score on CD 1, the additional music on CD 2. The “Main Theme From Nate And Hayes (Overture)”, identified as such on the verbal slates present on the masters (albeit no overture appears in the film) is actually a literal reprise of the initial action cue mentioned above and appears on CD 2 as a rousing opener to the extras. The entire 2-CD set is presented from the 2-track stereo mixes provided by Paramount. Everything Jones recorded for the picture is present with just two cues displaying a small degree of wear and tear - though even these remain reasonably crisp and dynamic. Nearly 40 minutes of new highlights are far too numerous to highlight, though spotlight should go to opening sequence where titles first appear, vivid sacrifice music and numerous smaller cues surrounding pirate Bully Hayes imprisonment. Colorful “flipper-style” booklet design by Kay Marshall, compelling notes by Frank K. DeWald add to adventuresome atmosphere as well. Trevor Jones composes and produces, Marcus Dods conducts, London Symphony Orchestra performs. Intrada 2-CD set available while quantities and interest remain! Track List CD 1 01. NATE AND HAYES Music Composed by TREVOR JONES INTRADA ISC 417 Intrada presents an absolute gem this week, a dramatically expanded edition of Trevor Jones’ magnificent, sweeping score for for the 1983 Paramount film Nate and Hayes. Throughout film history, there has been a wealth of great and legendary film scores for swashbucklers, pirate adventures and other dramas set upon the sea, and Nate and Hayes has a solid place among them. The well-produced, previous issue necessitated a heavily truncated 40-minute program, presenting only half the score. This new Intrada 2-CD presentation offers all the music Jones recorded in London. Since the score’s running time is just short of 80 minutes (not including alternates and additional music from the sessions), this presentation features the full film score on CD 1 and presents all the extra material on a second, shorter “bonus” CD. Jones’ score for Nate and Hayes is an intoxicating blend of adventure, romance and skullduggery. Painted on a vast canvas it is held together structurally by a number of recurring themes subtly varied by the composer throughout the film. For those who admire his score to The Dark Crystal, Nate and Hayes scored just one year later shares many of the same sensibilities of the earlier score, making them excellent companions. In the film, Captain Bully Hayes (Tommy Lee Jones) is illegally selling arms to South Pacific islanders when the deal goes bad and he and his men must fight off a tribe of female warriors. Hayes escapes, but falls into the hands of his erstwhile friend—but now archenemy— Ben Pease (Max Phipps). Awaiting execution in a Spanish prison, Hayes tells his story to an intrepid reporter, starting with Hayes transporting a spunky English girl, Sophie (Jenny Seagrove) and Nate Williamson (Michael O’Keefe), to a remote island where they are to be married by Nate’s missionary uncle. Pease and his crew interrupt the ceremony, murdering the uncle, kidnapping Sophie and carrying the natives off to slavery. Nate and Hayes (both of whom are now in love with Sophie) arrive in the nick of time and rescue her. I haven't listened to the LLL release in a long time, but I do remember enjoying it. I'll buy this release to support any other Trevor Jones releases...like an expanded Cleopatra, Dark Crystal, Hideaway, G.I. Jane, Kiss of Death, Arachnophobia...

I think Nate and Hayes sounds like Jones, and I like parts of it, but I've always found it incredibly repetitive (that action motif in particular does wear out its welcome, with very little variation) even at 40 minutes. Now if I was told that the complete score had important new material rather than more repetition, I might be interested. Yavar

Please let me know if it's improved! I can think of many cases where a complete score listen has felt more engaging (and somehow less long) than a truncated album, if the latter has poor cue selection. Yavar
