I recently listened to Gil Melle's title music for the 90 minute pilot movie of THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, and then compared it to Oliver Nelson's first year theme. Very interesting. You can hear all the music off one of the websites about the show. This site also includes the vocal sung by Dusty Springfield.

I forgot the URL for the site, but those who are more technically proficient than I, can easily find and access it.

This show was my favorite along with Kolchak: The Night Stalker during my formative high school years leading me to write a teleplay for both shows, but unfortunately unproduced.

James,

Oliver Nelson composed terrific music for the show, making great and inventive use of the electronics, combined with his caracteristic percussions+strings writing.

A very fine and unfortunately - it seems nowadays - forgotten composer.

He was the real creative force behind the jazz score for "Last Tango in Paris", providing a wonderful underscore and arrangements of Barbieri's themes.

Dear Thierry,

I knew you would respond to this. I'm waiting to hear from Graham Watt, another fan of Oliver Nelson, (who was kind enough to send me a copy of the Spanish version of Film Music, Numero 7, with my translated article (not by me!) on Lalo Schifrin at The Blue Note. As an English teacher, I found it amusing to note the idiomatic differences in the translation.

Stephen Lister from England is also from our "generation," and has a lot of respect for Oliver Nelson's talent, and yet short-lived life.

I clearly recall the Dusty Springfield vocal, but can't remember much of Gil Melles music, I'm sorry to say.

Oliver Nelson.....a very skilled man. I have some of his jazz records but he was certainly a VERY underrated composer. I'd love to see THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN on CD someday.

The only Oliver Nelson soundtrack on LP I have is ZIG ZAG. I listened to a couple of his jazz albums years ago when THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN came out. Another wasted life from drug abuse.

I just hope there are no soundclips of Lee Majors warbling "Jamie"...They could "rebuild" him, but they obviously couldn't do anything about that singing voice for six million...

I'm with you guys. Episode scores from SIX MILLION would be a great treasure. And I wish the best eps were on DVD, too. So far, nothing.

Does this CD feature Lee Majors crooning that voice-over song about Jamie, the Bionic Woman, after he thought she was dead? (It was this episode that introduced Jamie Sommers and the spin off, "The Bionic Woman". Even as a child I remember the song being woefully sung by Mr Majors, with dreadful lyrics along the lines of, "Jamie, I love her 'til I die".

Ah! Well, here in the UK, Universal's DVD and Video set-up have issued a number of SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN and BIONIC WOMAN DVDs...each with 3 episodes a disc. The episode selection seems fairly random, but episodes ARE available. Go to www.universal-playback.com. As far as I know they do not do overseas orders, though I may be wrong.

I went to Amazon.com's UK site and saw. I wish I could order those DVD's, but they're encoded for Region 2. I'm a Region 1 man myself.

Why would these not be released for the American market? Why?

Good question! As a (UK) fan of THE WEST WING tv series, I've been intrigued to find out that the series has yet to be released in the US on video or DVD...whereas over here all of season 1 is out and the first half of season 2 was released today!

Apparently one reason is that the distributors need to milk as much cash as they can from the show by various screenings (eg syndication I suppose)before putting it out on DVD.

I wonder if this is the same reason for the lack of SMDM on DVD in the States?

SMDM has long ago recouped its investment in syndication and foreign sales... just waiting for the powers that be at Universal/MCA to get around to releasing them in the US.

Shocked. Shocked, I am. That you would dispise Lee Major's singing Magnum Opus. I love that "Sweet Jamie" song and it's instrumental version. He ranks right up there with William Shatner.

Can't you guys appreciate good music?

If there ever is a Six Million Dollar Man soundtrack, I hope they include that little ditty.

Sincerely

JThree

Just bringing this thread back to the fore....Season 1 of TSMDM (including the three 'pilots' THE MOON AND THE DESERT, WINE,WOMAN AND WAR and SOLID GOLD KIDNAPPING) was released today here in England by Universal Playback.

Anyone wanting to hear the Dusty Springfield song can hear it on the end credits of SOLID GOLD KIDNAPPING Part 2. I'm afraid its a crudely truncated version of the longer piece that accompanied the 'feature' version which I've seen a few times.

All the pilots in this DVD set have the standard SMDM series opening and closing credits as far as I can tell, though I loved the Stu Philips closing music for WINE WOMEN AND WAR, a jaunty piece that rather surprisingly accompanies a mushroom cloud explosion.... smile

The Oliver Nelson music is great but I loved the score for WINE WOMEN AND WAR: appropriately funky and percussive in places and atmospheric in others. Well done Mr Stu Phillips.

Sad that we'll probably never be able to have music like this other than on DVD releases...frown

I, too am a fan of Oliver Nelson's work, though I was initially introduced to the name Oliver Nelson through his album Blues and the Abstract Truth. In addition to being a talented arranger and composer, he had a beautiful tone on tenor saxophone. SMDM was a show I watched religiously when I was very young, like five or six, but since I hadn't seen the show in over twenty years, it was a shockeroo to learn after watching the show on Sci-Fi channel some years ago that he composed TV music, too.

As a SMDM fanatic/tragic(self-proclaimed and proud of it!) who is waiting for the US release of these dvds-and they will come,it just takes time-here is what I have been able to come up, regarding the music situation for this show:-
1ST PILOT-Melle's music is interesting but totally different to what came afterwards. Must confess some of it seems totally inappropriate to me, at certain times, thru the pilot. Perhaps what came after has coloured my opinion.
2ND PILOT-WINE,WOMEN & WAR-Had the great opening title sequence with the Springfield vocal. The END CREDITS of this 2nd pilot have the longer version of the song, played over the freeze-frame of the atomic explosion's mushroom cloud.
As a kid here in Australia, I can remember that the FIRST SEASON of the show had the vocal theme song as the main title music. After that, I THINK it changed to the more well-known version.
3RD PILOT-As stated above.
No one can argue that Nelson (and J.J Johnson's episodic scores are FANTASTIC.....great brass work-plenty of trumpets and horns...leaves tv composing today for DEAD!!!)
It's interesting to note that apparently the dvd pilot movie versions seem to be the same as the versions released on VHS by Universal playback 3/4 years ago. Is SOLID GOLD KIDNAPPING presnted here as a 2 parter? This is what I got from the previous poster(sorry, didn't catch your name). If this is the case, UNIVERSAL continue to treat this classic show like crap. Messed up opening & closing titles and incorrect versions....but perhaps I'm expecting too much??? Nah, don't think so!
RE: Release dates around the world....Australia for a long time got the raw end of the stick in this area but references to THE WEST WING made me think I should share this around...WEST WING SEASONS 1-4 are available here, TRU CALLING SEASONS 1 & 2 have already been out for about 2 months and the entire BUFFY and ANGEL series were totally available right after their series finales...and I saw that BUFFY SEASON 7 was only finally released in the US earlier this year!!! I don't understand it all!!!
Anyway, here's to all the SMDM & BW FANS around the world...anybody want to talk or share stuff(i have a few home made things some may be interested in) email me at aak@netspace.net.au

If you just page back up the screen Andrew you will see both my name and what I said with the greatest ease. These forums are very user-friendly you know....smile

The pilots are all presented - as I stated - as *two parters* rather than feature films. Consequently the music is placed as per what I posted (so you don't for example get the Dusty Springfield vocal at the start of WINE,WOMAN AND WAR).

OH YEAH. THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN!

Gil Melle's pilot music heavily relied on electronics as compared to Oliver Nelson's series music.

OLIVER NELSON IS THE MAN!

When it first aired, I would religiously record every episode on cassette and listen to his action cues over and over again. My brother and I would play by fighting in slow motion. Falling over the furniture. Diving off the bed.
Wrestling in the pool. IT WAS FUN.

I believe the BEST REPRESENTATIVE EPISODE of his music is THE DAY OF THE ROBOT. It's the episode that stars John Saxon as the robot. There's plenty of lengthy cues that showcases Nelson's flair for action score writing. Brilliant beyond belief.

His title music for the film SKULLDUGGERY is a
tour de force. BRAVO!
