Sorry if this has been posted previously, but thought this might be of interest: In 1939, Photoplay included a long article on the making of JUAREZ which devoted several paragraphs to Korngold and his score. See the relevant section here:

JUAREZ wad originally supposed to be a roadshow. The published screenplay has scenes not in the present version of the film. The music tracks exist, but have never been commercially released. Too bad, because it’s one of Korngold’s best.

The original music tracks have been commercially released here in Europe on a Tsunami CD (soundwise much better and with less compression than the earlier Korngold CDs on that label) and if you remember it we have already talked about it on this board just two years ago:
http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?forumID=1&pageID=1&threadID=113421&archive=0

This double CD (which also contains the almost complete original PRINCE AND THE PAUPER as well as those surviving 15 minutes from BETWEEN TWO WORLDS which have been mentioned in the "BETWEEN TWO WORLDS" thread on this board during the last few days) is a bit hard to get nowadays, but for example still available at a very cheap price at Rosebud in Spain:
http://www.rosebudbandasonora.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=29&products_id=23074&osCsid=

I would say that my comments about it from 2016 are still valid:

"Even 10 years have now gone by since that really quite good Tsunami release of JUAREZ/PRINCE AND THE PAUPER/BETWEEN TWO WORLDS so that I am happy that at least this double CD exists, or who wants to wait for another 10 years for an official US release which maybe won't even happen anymore and which in addition won't sound much better anyway?"

I absolutely agree with you, Stefan - a reissue is longtime overdue!

In my opinion this score is the most underrated work in the Korngold score pantheon- very operatic (think of Carlotta´s prayer in the chapell which plays out like a rezitativo - the "Violanta" treatment of "La Paloma" and there is even a actual tenor-Solo in the revolution scene).
Please also do not forget the Austrian context to the storyline (Maximilian was the brother of Franz Joseph of Austria) which must have put this project very close to E.W.´s heart!

I performed the "Archduke Maximilian fanfare" with my concert band this year. - The fanfare is only short of a minute long, but to many of my musicians indeed this is a favourite. When I hear them humming the catchy main theme, this really goes deep inside... (I´m Austrian, you know wink )

My friend Bill Wrobel posted a video of our performance on youtube which may be of interest to you - here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yWcOEpUkGU

Thanks Stefan for the Youtube link with your concert band arrangement of the Korngold fanfare. Very nice indeed. smile

I am sure that a reissue of this Korngold double CD here in Germany won´t happen anymore as the times of the Tsunami label are long over and also retailers like SAE in the USA wouldn´t sell such a CD - which for them is of course a boot - nowadays.

Sorry to hear that about the Rosebud website.
It´s really difficult to find that CD nowadays, but I see that on the French Priceminister website you can still buy a copy. Good luck:

Juarez WAS a roadshow. It was cut down for general release. Not sure if the roadshow version is still available. All video versions to date have been on the general release version.

I would love to see this film. No luck finding it in the library, though.

Well the Rosebud adventure continues. Finally got in touch to with me after a Spanish bank holiday. Oddly yesterday the website indicated it was out of stock in my cart but today indicated in stock. I placed the order and will see. They have numerous problems on the website including an inability to register in English, and oddly when I placed the order I found another address on my account which I just created a day ago. Googled and its a real person. If order fails I’ll try the French website or another website I found. I’ll keep you posted through here unless you’d prefer to do it by email

It's an impressive film in many ways, but curiously out of balance with its own title. The picture could as easily have been called MAXIMILIAN or (following the source novel) THE PHANTOM CROWN. It begins with Napoleon's imperialistic appointment of a Viennese prince as "emperor" of Mexico and ends with the latter's execution. The tragic character of Maximilian is depicted with more sympathy than the title figure played by Paul Muni in heavy "waxworks" makeup. Brian Aherne is the one who earned the acting nomination. It was in the supporting category, though I suspect he had more screen time than Muni. I suppose the post-release editing had something to do with the film's curious tilt.

Korngold's score inescapably and rightly emphasizes the Austrian character of the court. I'd love to hear more of this splendid music -- but only a modern recording can do justice to Korngold's brilliant orchestral textures. For now we have the Koch album and of course the magnificent Violin Concerto.

To David in Berkeley:

You can find Juarez, the 120 minute general release version, on the Warner Archive website. Oldies.com is currently running a sale on the archive titles, so you might be able to get it a a reasonable cost. Worth checking out.

In Rosebud you can buy this CD without problem.
http://www.rosebudbandasonora.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_184&products_id=23074
Payment with Paypal can not be made automatically. First we check that the CDs that are purchased are available, then we send the amount and, if you want to pay with paypal, we authorize the payment.
Rosebud has a very large catalog and we need to verify that the purchased items are available, before making the payment.

$15 clams. At those rates, I'd rather rent than own.

Pick it up for 11 clams when Warner next has its '4 for $44' sale. Applies to blu-rays too! I got a copy of JUAREZ from Warner Archive and found it compelling and well-acted (to say nothing about the score) - well worth owning. Brian Aherne is marvelously sympathetic as Maximillian. What a strange bit of history this film captures!

Well thanks to a Spanish bank holiday getting in way responses were delayed. They are fixing web site problems. I was not hacked. Got to order cd via PayPal as described above. Got confirmation on shipping. Lucky I snagged it in cart while waited for responses. Since then site says item not found. Assuming last copy and looking forward to getting. Best way to get in touch with them is email address on site and not web form.
