THURSDAY, AUGUST 16 STAR WARS---production designer Neil Lamont said a Tatooine-set spinoff movie was underway, but Lucasfilm cancelled it after the disappointing SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, "We were just starting our work on another Star Wars spinoff and yeah. We were actually just making our mark on Tatooine -- which would have been interesting and some other new galaxies. So hopefully, if that comes back, we'll get the chance to be able to do that further." THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT---Jack Nicholson has left the Kristen Wiig/Paramount Pictures remake of TONI ERDMAN. SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE---Nicolas Cage commented on playing Spider-Man Noir in the animated movie, “I tried to channel those noir films with Bogart, and have those kinds of sounds that he might make with Cagney, or Edward G. Robinson, that kind of way of talking. I tried to give the character that. It was a lot of fun. I think it should be quite funny. The movie definitely has a sense of humor, and that’s a good thing because it’s good for the whole family.” Phil Lord and Chris Miller are the directors. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3---VARIETY reports that Walt Disney Studios and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige have agreed that James Gunn will not be rehired for VOL. 3. However, they might use Gunn's script for the sequel. GAME OF THRONES---Nikolaj-Coster Waldau commented on the series finale, “I read it, and I wrote [creators] Dan [“D.B.” Weiss] and David [Benioff] and said I don’t think they could have done a better job...I’ve spent so many years working on this and been guessing and trying to figure out how this will end — and when I read it, some of the parts of it I’d get, and other parts of it were just completely shocking and surprising.” He added, “And it wasn’t, there were none of those horrible — you know shows where it’s a murder mystery and at the very last minute you find out it doesn’t make sense? But here all the pieces fit into this massive jigsaw puzzle.” OUTLAW KING---photo of Chris Pine starring in the Netflix movie about Scottish king Robert the Bruce. JURASSIC PARK---the original movie will return to over 500 theaters on September 16, 18 and 19 to celebrate its 25th anniversary. LOST IN SPACE---Season 2 will introduce two new characters. Ava is a mechanically-inclined woman in her 20s-40s, and Captain Jiang is the female captain of the Resolute. CASTAWAY---movie underway based on Sam Peckinpah's unfilmed screenplay based on the novel about a man who survives a catastrophe by hiding in a department store. NINE LIVES---movie underway based on the Ursula K. Le Guin novelette. RANDOM ACTS OF VIOLENCE---Jesse Williams and Jordana Brewster star in this movie based on the graphic novel. SHOOTER---USA Network cancelled the series which will be shopped to other networks. ANNE WITH AN E---Netflix renewed the series for Season 3. GOTHAM---Bane's father will appear in three episodes in Season 5 which will be the last season. TRIVIA---in STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, the Battle of the Mutara Nebula, in which the USS Enterprise duels the USS Reliant, is based on the movie THE ENEMY BELOW in which a Navy destroyer escort duels a German U-boat. In THE WRATH OF KHAN, the USS Enterprise and Captain Kirk (William Shatner) battle the USS Reliant and Khan (Ricardo Montalban). In THE ENEMY BELOW, the USS Haynes and Captain Murrell (Robert Mitchum) battle a German U-boat and commander von Stolberg (Curt Jurgens).

CASTAWAY---movie underway based on Sam Peckinpah's un-filmed screenplay based on the novel about a man who survives a catastrophe by hiding in a department store. Now that sounds interesting. I hope they get an old-school composer to score it, like Shire. I wonder if any Wilson balls will be in there... ;-)

What, may I ask, is a “mechanically-inclined woman”? A female engineer? Half woman, half robot? A lady who, er, gets a buzz out of her own company? A girl who’s kept at a 45 degree angle by some odd machine? The correct answer is number four. Btw TG; I was gonna do ANOTHER "WWTG DO>>" post for ALIEN COVENANT (which you inexplicably liked!?) but it would have been the same as PROMETHEUS brm

I rather enjoyed SOLO myself. It was a fun, very involving space opera. The characters were well draw, the actors engaging and the pacing was pretty perfect. I walked out both thrilled at a good night in the movies and bummed that it was doing so badly. I would like to see a complete trilogy. Ah well.
