SEASON 1:

A 1975 series, which according to Wikipedia, has no relation to the films.

Yes, I'm sticking with the season header even though there wasn't a second.

For those too lazy to go through each episode with the time stamps I have provided, there are suites.

EDIT: NEW links as of September 26, 2022.

"Matt Helm" (Pilot)
By: Jerry Fielding
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBrUvbrYbrc
Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?=QtNFYIYTv-8

This is Fielding's only effort. Fielding provided a theme which was only used for this episode (heard at about 2:00 in).

Highlights:
  • 6:55 in. Menacing woodwinds, brass and xylophone.
  • 14:10 in.
  • 15:09 in. Cymbal tapping, brass, some snare for some delicious jazz using the theme Fielding did that didn't end up being kept. Yeah, none of this faux jazz stuff so many composers try to pull off now; Jerry was the real deal. More at 30:08 in.
  • 17:51 in. Some tension with brass and drum kit opens the cue.
  • 29:50 in. Probably the best water fountain music ever.
  • 32:28 in.
  • 36:40 in.
  • 40:19 in.
  • 44:44 in.
  • 50:17 in. It sound to me like parts of the cue were dialed out, so an official release may yield unheard bits.
  • 1:02:21 in.
  • 1:05:22 in.
  • 1:11:42 in. The end credits.

    "Dead Men Talk"
    By: Morton Stevens
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXEErsdgN04
    https://ok.ru/video/5004825529035
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-5nWxmtsTA

This is Stevens' only effort for the series. He also provided the theme for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 4:03 in.
  • 10:03 in. One of the cues that got tracked into one or more episodes.
  • 13:38 in. This ultra cool cue was tracked like crazy into episodes. Sometimes three or four times, sometimes half the score!
  • 19:02 in. More coolness.
  • 25:19 in.
  • 27:00 in. Some cool car chase music, though dialed down low. Continues after the commercial break. Picks back up about 28:40 in.
  • 34:47 in. More coolness.
  • 39:05 in. Short but good.
  • 42:08 in. Yet more coolness. I'm not entirely sure if he's reprising ideas or if this is tracked.
  • 47:38 in.

    Damn cool score.

The producers apparently loved the score so much, that they tracked it into other episodes.

"Now I Lay Me Down to Die"
    By: Jerrold Immel
    https://ok.ru/video/5460015712909
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGqKrQRbb6s
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?=aJlLleT75dk

    Highlights:
  • 1:00:05 in.
  • 1:05:47 in. This cue was also tracked in one or more episodes.
  • 1:11:42 in.
  • 1:14:19 in.
  • 1:16:10 in.
  • 1:23:33 in. And after the commercial break, though it's mixed very low. I wonder if any of those poll-side players are musicians on the score.
  • 1:29:36 in.
  • 1:31:18 in.

    "Scavenger's Paradise"
    By: Richard Hazard
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WUwSft1Wv8
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?=4mcwMDiF5Xc

This is Hazard's only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 1:41:44 in.
  • 1:57:45 in.
  • 2:00:13 in.
  • 2:04:10 in.
  • 2:04:50 in.
  • 2:06:35 in.
  • 2:09:25 in.
  • 2:16:15 in. And after the commercial break.
  • 2:19:17 in.
  • 2:22:28 in.
  • 2:24:25 in.

Some Stevens tracked in, during a car chase scene; I wonder if Hazard did something that was replaced. At the time I thought this was cool Hazard scoring, now I know it's Stevens.

Cheers Justin, especially for the Fielding confirmation. I had that on cassette ("direct -from YOUR television!") when I was a teen, and I knew that it was the same theme as the previous HUNTERS ARE FOR KILLING and the later THE BIG SLEEP. But until now (I even asked about it here on the Board) I hadn't had any solid replies, but I knew I wasn't wrong! Yup, it's the same theme, with very minor reworkings. I also zipped through some of the highlights you, eh... highlighted - and it's all much in the same vein as HUNTERS and SLEEP. In fact that payoff at the end was "re-used" in THE BIG SLEEP, but knowing Jerry F, it had probably turned up in an even earlier score.

Jerry Fielding - absolute genius, one of my favourite composers, and he never let a good theme go to waste.

    Continuing SEASON 1:

NOTE: I've gone back and added suites to the first batch of reviews.

    "The Game of the Century"
    By: Jerrold Immel
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ8yiaJySCw
    https://ok.ru/video/6083193604749
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ni_DnkIjv-8

    Highlights:
  • 1:30 in.
  • 25:43 in. Is this part of the cue original? The rest it was edited onto was tracked Stevens scoring.
  • 29:58 in. The volume on this short cue is mixed really really low.
  • 47:30 in.

This episode tracks in cues from that one episode Morton Stevens scored: fourteen times.
And again for a car chase scene and fight scene around the end. Was original scoring by Immel replaced this much? Half of more of the score in the episode is tracked Stevens' pieces.

    "Murder on Ice"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7feMOJu3l0c
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2ym1zkL51I

    Highlights:
  • 54:25 in.
  • 1:03:07 in.
  • 1:13:31 in.
  • 1:14:29 in.
  • 1:15:55 in.
  • 1:20:17 in.
  • 1:21:38 in.
  • 1:24:08 in.
  • 1:30:00 in.
  • 1:34:48 in.

Another episode that tracks in part of a cue from the one episode Stevens did.

    "Squeeze Play"
    By: Richard Shores
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO-AE1lKk0k
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7etYAlM7N0
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7bji7u (NEW link as of 2-24-2021)

    Highlights:
  • 1:41:18 in. Creepy clown alert, for you clownflakes.
  • 1:53:03 in.
  • 1:53:43 in.
  • 1:55:40 in. This cue ended up getting tracked into another episode or two, unless I've forgotten and this is tracked in this episode. Which ever way, it's a cool cue. More at *.
  • 1:59:42 in. The cue begins quietly.
  • 2:03:47 in. *
  • 2:13:55 in.
  • 2:22:48 in. The cue begins quietly. *. And after the commercial break.

    "Deadly Breed"
    By: Jerrold Immel
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBTFylSOGcc
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP2pqhd9ikM

    Highlights:
  • Nothing. Aside from some quiet source material, I can't even tell if there's really much of any new scoring! Nonetheless I made a short suite.

I think parts of a cue or two from the previous Shores-scored episode, are tracked. Part of that cool cue is tracked for sure. It also tracked part of a cue from another episode but I don't recall which off hand.

Another episode that tracks in part of a cue from the one episode Stevens did. Over and over and over again.
Another action scene tracked. Why even bothering to hire a talent like Immel is you're going to either replace some of his score or just track is existing music instead of him composing anything new?

Must have been a plumb assignment:
Composer #1: "Hey, if they ask you to score Matt Helm, do it; same pay and they'll track half the episode."
    Composer #2: "Score!"

    "Death Rods"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy2qSvy2A7U
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z_Yvt62hNw

This is Parker's final effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 51:46 in.
  • 53:09 in.
  • 57:20 in.
  • 59:36 in.
  • 1:06:55 in.
  • 1:24:50 in.
  • 1:26:28 in. Sounds like Parker adapted Immel material here.
  • 1:37:13 in.
  • 1:39:08 in.

Another episode that tracks in part of a cue from the one episode Stevens did. An entire action set piece was tracked with Stevens, with a short bit of Immel at the end.

Parts of a cue from "Now I Lay Me Down to Die" (Immel), is tracked. Over and over and over again.

In fact, most of the episode score is comprised of Stevens, followed by Immel. I'm not sure how much material is by Parker, or if there is any original material, quite frankly.

Tomorrow I'll finish the series, but for a day or two afterwards I'll still be retroactively adding suites.

    Finishing the Series:

Once again I've gone back to the previous batch of reviews and added suites.

    "Double Jeopardy"
    By: Jerrold Immel
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twfDZYye3jU
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nbqqd3CyvBs

    Highlights:
  • 1:41:57 in.
  • 1:45:10 in.
  • 1:58:43 in.
  • 2:03:57 in. Short, but I like the way the Stevens' theme can be played in a James Bond or The Saint way, in a short riff.
  • 2:13:03 in.
  • 2:18:13 in. I don't recall this being in the Stevens' scored episode, so I think Immel is adapting material here, until 2:19:19 where it is tracked.
  • 1:28:14 in. The ending part is tracked.

Another episode that tracks in part of a cue from the one episode Stevens did.
Yet again another action set piece is tracked. And then another one.

It also tracked a piece from another episode that I don't recall off hand, during a pool side meeting where a girl is licking ice cream. Easiest paycheck ever; director: "Okay, get into this bikini and lick ice cream. And don't say anything."
    CAH-CHING!

A parts of a cues from yet another episode (or two) is tracked. I can't recall which one. Might have been Shores' material. Certainly that cool car chase music from "Squeeze Play" can be heard in the climax scene at the end (more tracking).

    "Think Murder"
    By: Richard Shores
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0yQqot0m8g
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBJSO-KkGEI

This is Shores' final effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 6:27 in.
  • 49:07 in.

The vast majority of the score is tracked, best I can tell. There next to nothing new. There won't be a suite for this one, since the only two cues I noted above, are covered in SFX.

Another episode that tracks in part of a cue from the one episode Stevens did.
Right in the opening and during other scenes.

Another piece is tracked from another episode I don't recall. As well as a piece by Parker from "Death Rods". The skydiving sequence is tracked from an Immel-scored episode, as I recall.

    "Murder on the Run"
    By: Jerrold Immel
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlD5LBOW2XA
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLiHFOXSEn4

    Highlights:
  • 58:11 in.
  • About 1:04:00 in.
  • 1:24:22 in.

Another episode that tracks in part of a cue from the one episode Stevens did.
Right in the opening and during other scenes. I guess Stevens' wasn't free to do more; tracking -- the next best thing.

Part of a piece from another episode is tracked, but I don't recall which off hand. Maybe a couple more episodes on top of that.

    "Panic"
    By: Jerrold Immel
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwJHjryvLZ8
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jHiIpiJ5n0
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZf31ms9U8c

    Highlights:
  • 1:44:47 in.
  • 2:26:42 in.

Guest starring composer Murray MacLeod, who also did some acting. I can hear the audition now:

Murray: "Oh, by the way, I also compose for television series, too. Would you be interested in hearing my demo?"
Producer: "LOL, that's okay, we've already tracked it with existing Morton Stevens material to death."

Another episode that tracks in part of a cue from the one episode Stevens did.
Right in the opening and during other scenes.

Another episode I don't recall offhand, has a cue tracked in here. We hear more of it here at a higher volume and less obstructed by SFX, then before. Begins around the time Matt finds the brunette in the bikini around the pool.

And part of a cue from another Immel-scored episode is tracked. I don't recall the name off hand.

I wonder if any of those song musicians at 2:06:08 are sessions players on the series' scoring. And if that's a fake recording studio or the real studio where the show's music was done. "RPM Records" the (presumably fake) sign says.

Unfortunately, I had to skip this one; NO LOAD FOUND.

"Die Once, die Twice" (final episode)
    By: Jerrold Immel
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvR7pRubWP0

I'll double back tomorrow and add suites from the remaining episodes.

Fielding provided a theme which was only used for this episode (heard at about 2:00 in).

Thanks Justin for your great work!
I remember there was some confusion here years ago about who wrote the series theme. I never heard before that the Pilot indeed had a theme by Fielding. smile

Yes you did! I told you it did 20 years ago! And in my earlier post in this thread!

Typical of pilots and some series back then, the theme composer was imply not credited most of the time if at all. Thankfully, BMI or ASCAP (I forget which), show Fielding for a theme and of course Stevens for his theme.

Turns out last year I made a suite of "Die Once, Die Twice" back when a load of the episode was up, so I can cover that episode. At the time I made the suite, however, I had no idea how much tracking was in the episode, so the suite features tracked score.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvR7pRubWP0

    Original material at:
  • 2:58 in.
  • 3:38 in.

Well, I'm off to work on the suites for the remaining episodes.

And I've added the suites. I added one to "Think Murder" anyway, since I was so close to having done them all, but it's choppy. :-(

Anyway, I wonder if any labels have any interest in releasing the scoring. The production companies listed on IMDb:
    Meadway Productions
    Columbia Pictures Television

2CD's should do it, unless a lot of scoring was dropped since there was so much tracking; then three or possibly even four might be needed.

I'll probably start a new series tomorrow. Jerry Goldsmith and others -- oh my!

The Morton Stevens score is almost taken from One-Man Jury and Hawaii 5-0. But it's still a thrill to hear his punchy music. What a genius composer he was!!

If La-La Land plan one day to release a Hawaii 5-0 cd boxset, I'm ready to even co-produce it !!
12 seasons of Stevens, Ray, Shores, Broughton, Immel, Drasnin, Romanis...

The theme was so popular for Fielding that he injects it in the season 4 episode of Mannix entitled "One for the Lady" (1970).

    "Matt Helm" (Pilot)
    By: Jerry Fielding
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE_nyoF9sG8
    Suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?=QtNFYIYTv-8

This is Fielding's only effort. Fielding provided a theme which was only used for this episode (heard at about 2:00 in).

    Highlights:

50:17 in. It sound to me like parts of the cue were dialed out, so an official release may yield unheard bits.

This car chase passage is a heavy rework of The Mechanic and Kolchak's episode "The Travi Collection".

All new YouTube links for the episodes. Keep in mind some of the episode time stamps were done with videos that had two episodes shoved into one video, so not all time stamps will line up. I'll probably fix that at some point, but for now...

All new links. Time stamps on some episodes will be useless, as I never made ones for singular episode loads of some episodes.
