Saw a new release of the 2001: A Space Odyssey soundtrack, labeled "Music from the Motion Picture" in the bins at Amoeba Records.

It had much simplified titles, and fewer track numbers than the old Rhino version.

Can anyone give us the story on this release?

Stick with the Rhino.

While the new version contains the complete Blue Danube Waltz, it unfortunately abbreviates the 6-minute Ligeti Requiem Kyrie and omits the Karajan/Vienna Philharmonic version of Also Sprach Zarathustra that was actually used in the film.

It also omits the altered version of Aventures used near the end of the film.

Hey guys! It's the 50th anniversary of 2001. Lets re-release the soundtrack but this time with less music. Who'll notice?

Not surprising.

Does anyone know of a way to assemble these individual recordings from their original record labels?

I've got the used-in-the-film recording of the Zarathustra opening with Karajan/Vienna Phil on Decca's Karajan/Vienna set.

But I'd love to have the highest quality transfers of Blue Danube and the Ligeti pieces that I could get.

And how about the La Gazza Ladra overture from A Clockwork Orange? I've never been able to determine which Deutsche Grammophon recording that one is.

Did the Rhino release have the Karajan/Vienna opening to Zarathustra?

Did the Rhino release have the Karajan/Vienna opening to Zarathustra?

Yes. Tracks 2 and 8.

FYI, track 10 is the Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic MGM Records version (discogs has the wrong credits for track 10).
