I saw this new listing at SAE this morning, and really got my hopes up. An anthology of cues from 19 of his films, some new to c.d. And for the enthusiast, they will likely be pleased. I however was hoping (against hope), that there would finally be a cue or two from his 'The Celluloid Closet' documentary from the 90's. It remains a terrific score to a well-received documentary film. Perhaps in a Volume II.

I'm very on/off in relation to Burwell as a composer, but this looks like a neat way to sample a lot of his work. I've just received a promo, and will be listening to it shortly (I was actually told about Burwell's involvement in the upcoming WSA back in January, so I've been looking forward to a CD like this). But I'm kinda disappointed that they've omitted what I consider Burwell's very best score -- ROB ROY. There is one score which is head and shoulder over any other Burwell score, IMO. Kalifornia from 1993, where he kind of sounds like Patrick O'Hearn. Guitar by David Torn. He's mined that well MANY times before Thor. THE ALAMO, DOC HOLLYWOOD, THIS BOY'S LIFE, MYSTERY ALASKA, the main theme from MILLER'S CROSSING (okay, that theme isn't BY him) all feature some lovely, romantic scoring in his inimitable style. MILLER'S CROSSING is often big, but not really 'romantic' in that sense, IMO. DOC HOLLYWOOD is too 'lightweight' comedy. I only have vague memories of MYSTERY ALASKA, and THE ALAMO and THE BOY'S LIFE, I don't think I've heard. So you could be right. I've just always considered ROB ROY the equivalent of BLACK BEAUTY or SOMMERSBY by Elfman -- a sound that is somewhat 'untypical' of what the composer is most known for (sort of quirky, minimalist, exlporative, "indie" stuff).
