It starts next Monday in the UK (the Fox channel), & I think it's maybe Sunday in the US. I saw The Talking Dead all about the new season last night & they said all the right things. They called the first eight seasons the first chapter & season 9 the start of chapter two (maybe a bit optimistic there), but I'll give it a go (it doesn't cost me anything to record it).

They better go back to basics and move the storylines a bit faster - me n joan are not sitting through anymore slow- motion drag-out-the-conclusion jobs like the last 2 series that were the worst so far.

Spoilers

Ep2 series 9 and already starting to annoy me.

The whole of Rick's group spent 7 nightmare series learning that to stay alive you dont take chances. If you dont listen to your instinct, someone gets killed. If in doubt, out. Its a preservation rule that keeps them alive. So do the scriptwriters expect us to believe they would suddenly all go against the code they have learned the hard way? Giving the benefit of the doubt to a character who deserves it is one thing, but someone who is the incarnation of pure evil, who killed several of their members, who would just be too dangerous to keep alive, no, he would be killed the moment they captured him.

Now we all know what is gonna happen - just to drag it all out even further.

I bet you dragon53s walking dead items show continued decline in ratings.

The writing on this show is...something else. There's no question why millions fewer tune in.

Season 9 takes place "18 months later," so I hear, yet we see Rick making a pledge to get the Sanctuary people what they need so they can get back on their feet. So what was going on for the last year?

Youknowwho is alive. Not dead. Alive. WTF for? Apparently for Rick to have impromptu yap sessions with!

All the leaders, i.e. cast principals, or nearly all, go to fetch an Amish wagon and plow from the museum in D.C. Hilarious. On the way back, they're unable to eliminate a small group of zombies without a bit of trouble. One of the worst edits I've ever seen allows a zombie to end a redshirt.

Second episode: Zombies! Lots! Here comes the cavalry! Hack! Slash! Blam! Thud! KA-POW! Rick has an idea! LOGS!! He shoots the rope and the big wood rollers flatten the mothers like corn stalks.

An attitudinal laborer gets his walking papers from Rick. But Negan's still alive.

The Walking Dead wins the most awards for inconsistency.

Even though I hate the fact Negan lives, I thought the first two episodes in season 9 were rather interesting. The reforming of a civilization will not be an easy road, and so far I'm interested. Haven't seen much padding in the last two episodes.

I agree with Joan. Lots of promise in the first two episodes of season 9; they seem to be getting back on track in regards to the 'small community' (even though there's now a lot of them). I also don't like the fact that Negan is alive (rather speculative use of 'audience gratification undermining'....the challenging of our moral compass can only be stretched so long, per the 'bratty prince' in GAME OF THRONES), but as someone who doesn't read the comic books, I am slightly curious where this particular path will lead.

Negan getting out, and deaths, that's where it'll lead.
Unless one of the group goes in there and just shoots him.

By the way do you think someone in ricks group who doesnt agree with the lets-all-hug policy is killing off saviours?

I don't know if you guys every followed the comics at all - I've only read a few of the Omnibus volumes - but they didn't kill Negan there either. Obviously, the show differs pretty drastically with some of the characters, but that's probably a big reason why they kept him alive.

From dragon.

"THE WALKING DEAD---Season 9's Episode 2 had the lowest rating in series history with a 2.0 share in the 18-49 demographic with 4.9 million viewers. The previous low was a 2.4 share in Season 1. Also, Episode 2 drew 20% less viewers than Episode 1."

Walking dead scriptwriters and producers: take note. "the lowest rating in series history"
Way to go.

Surely there not going to season 10 - it didn't work early on for me - I only watched a handful of episodes early seasons, one mistake the show definitely made was offing Rooker he was quite a distinctive character with his lethal weapon arm, when you look at others kill per usual.

I haven't seen any of them yet, I'm recording the show & want to build up a few episodes before I start watching, the same with American Horror Story: Apocalypse.

I thought so too. But the early years were about the journey now it is about the characters. If you don't find them compelling it is boring. The loss of Rick could be devastating. They need a journey or new enemy. But they seem to be building a community so there not going anywhere. So maybe a new nemesis.

"....The WALKING DEAD---the ratings continue to spiral downwards. The last episode had a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic compared to a record-low 2.0 for the previous episode. Since Season 7, ratings have dropped 60%...."

60 per cent drop in 2 seasons???!!!

BILLCARSON:

From The Hollywood Reporter (today's article):

"From season seven to now, average same-day ratings for The Walking Dead have declined by a precipitous 60 percent in adults 18-49".

Somewhere, Frank Darabont is laughing his buttocks off.

It's a 9th season. Wasn't he fired in the first or second season? Still a good run without him.

I think he was fired after the first (& best) season. Since then it's been, too long at the farm, too long at the prison & too many battles between the various communities. I don't know why the producers had to follow the comics in any way at all (I'm sure that the overwhelming majority of the viewers have never read the comic, I've never), but even if this is the last season, nine seasons is not bad going.

There are some interesting twists and turns in this season. Last week, I thought the random philosophizing between Negan and Michonne was just silly padding, but the rest of the episode was okay. Seems like Daryl and Rick did bond a bit when they were in the hole. Kind of wish Maggie had experienced a bit of bonding with Rick before Rick left.

Also wish Maggie had killed Negan. I kind of think he played her to keep her from killing him by saying living was worse than dying.

I'm not sure why AMC said last night's episode would be Rick's last one. Today they announced that Rick will make three AMC Walking Dead movies. I wish he would have stayed, and I would think he would greatly miss his daughter.

Wonder what Garbage Gal means by saying she can bring some other group an "A" or a "B?"

This season has my attention, and I think it is better than season 8. There are lots of narrative threads that have my attention.

Hi joanie
I thought last week's grapple n fall in the convenient hole was just lazy scriptwriting. Ooh how can we get those two in a scrape? Bit similar with rick falling off the horse.

The negan thing - didnt ring true, him flitting between old evil confident negan and a gibbering wreck saying kill me. Youre either one or the other.
Hes gotta die by lucille, thats it. Mash up the legs with 50 blows and leave him to crawl away from walkers.

It's been a fine season so far, and I was surprised to see the more radical direction the show is taking from here on out (from the clips at the end of the episode). Looks very intriguing, to say the least.
