Well no surprise this score has grown on me quite a bit. Especially after cutting the playlist down to about an hour.

Would you mind sharing said playlist? I'd love to see what songs you pulled and see if it improves my listening experience as well. Thanks!

Tracks 19 and especially 20 with it's bell-like brass are back-to-back knockouts. I think the recording is the best, most organic sound his scores have had in years![/endquote

My first time listening to those two cues were rather positive. They sounded epic! Then when I played them a few more times something bugged me and I realized they sounded like "Two Steps From Hell" trailer music. So while they are highlights of the score, their rather generic compositions.

True, after repeated listening they don't necessarily hold up. I was initially struck by how much they had that classic JNH big finale sound to them, but kind of like the big ending track from Nanny McPhee Returns they have the Epic quality without tying the DNA to the rest of the score in a memorable way (compared with, say, Signs or Lady in the Water) . But I still maintain the trumpet ostinato is a bold choice for film scoring these days.

Really excited for this one. The first one was, IMO, one of the best scores of Howard's career and easily the best Potter score since AZKABAN.

ETA: To the OP, you may want to correct the typo in the header (it's "Grindelwald") just so this thread can be found easier later.

I'm in complete agreement on both accounts. This was by far my favorite score from last year, and has been added to my all-time top twenty.

Yes, they are very "RC" in temp. Not as robust as they could've been. That said, JNH can walk the fine line between classic composition and RC better than anyone.

Saw the film yesterday, really enjoyed it. JNH's score really stood out with some gloriously complex and emotion writing. After seeing his concert in London last December you can tell he's clearly fallen in love with film music again.

I've noticed a few negative comments on this board regarding JNH's scores this year and all I can say is if you think his recent scores are boring you're either tone deaf or dead inside.

2 plays in and I haven't enjoyed this one as much as the first one.
It's good, but I too hoped JNH might develop and expand the themes from FB1.
But no, apart from some quotes here and there, it's largely darker and more suspenseful material with some occasional bouts of beauty and magic.
My whittle edition (thus far) is much shorter than sol's (about 32 mins) and looks like this...

2. Newt & Leta 2:32
3. Dumbledore 2:11
4. The Kelpie 1:32
8. Queenie Searches for Jacob 1:35
10. Blood Pact 2:29
11. Capturing the Zouwu 1:33
13. Leta's Flashback 4:40
14. Salamander Eyes 2:38
15. Matagots 2:15
20. Wands into the Earth 4:04
22. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald 2:40
23. Dumbledore's Theme (Piano Solo) 1:27
25. Leta's Theme (Piano Solo) 2:04

I'm really diggin this one. It took me a few listens but it gets better with each listen and I'm discovering new things every time. With Red Sparrow, The Nutcracker (yes, I like that one too…) and this one I think he had a strong year. Here's hoping they ask him to back for 'Maleficent 2'.

Or they *are* boring.

I can't imagine a duller, more confused movie than this one, a movie that has very little to do with fantastic beasts and in which Grindelwald commits very few crimes. I think the lack of dramatic inertia in the story has carried over to Howard's score, which is very professionally done but which, of necessity, accompanies a lot of ominous talk about things that might happen, but which largely don't.

The movie is, to me, a complete dud; the score is a good deal better, but it can only do so much.

This ^

I can really tell a difference when he's tapping into the emotion and drama of the movie or (like too much of the sci-fi fantasy stuff he gets anymore) he's just coming up with pretty music not tied to any emotionally WOW moments in the actual movie....because they aren't there.

The neatest moments in the first Beasts score mirrored some actual touching relationships and impressive USE of the fantasy world-building on screen in service of the story.

I was disappointed that I found Rowling's actual screenplay to be a complete dud when I read it, too. She tried to walk back too much of what made the first one good in order to start on a more extended story path.

I lack the technical know-how to explain this, but this score sounds terrible, and it really affects my enjoyment of it. Some of Elfman's Justice League sounded similarly muffled. Something's up with some of these London recordings.

Ive been really enjoying all three Fantastic Beasts scores. Did this score have the least amount of music released?

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them had a Deluxe release.
Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore had a two disc release.
Fantastic Beasts The Crimes Of Grindelwald only had a one disc release? Not even bonus digital tracks?

Crimes of Grindelwald has the 3 piano tracks (23-25) as "bonus tracks" and sadly, thats it. No digital bonus tracks frown

Weird the second score didn't get a deluxe edition. Thanks for replying.
