I'm definitely liking the sound of the clips (via iTunes).

There appears to be rather a lot of quite gorgeous choir which blends really well with Newman's typical palette; heavily processed in some instances but very interesting.

Well, that's disappointing. Just previewed the clips. Not that there aren't nice moments, but based on the score they might as well have called it "Saving Mr. Baggins."

I obtained a pressed CD of this from Amazon (U.S.). I like both the subject and the composer. I guess I’ll catch the movie at some point, though the trailer makes it look like a Hallmark romance with darker tones around the edges.
And, I understand Tolkien’s family has not approved of this production.

The statement released by the Tolkien family has been misconstrued in an overly negative way. Here's a good article that addresses it, but in a nutshell, their statement wasn't meant as condemnation or anything so negative, merely a legal entity clarifying a lack of direct involvement.

I am picking my vacation reads right now and am going to pick up the Tolkien biography by Humphrey Carpenter. It has gotten solid reviews. I won't get to the book before the movie but they'll make a great pair.

Oh, I didn't even know about that. I may have to read it after I see the film. Thanks for mentioning it.

ST-321, I belong to something called Bookbub and receive daily emails with deep discounts on digital books. I have purchased some amazing titles for less than $3.00. Today they have the Tolkien biography for $2.99. That is a steal. I bought the hardcover but bought the Kindle version today for portability. I would check it out.

The US Amazon page states MOD. The UK Page does not. Has anyone confirmed it’s a pressed disc in the UK?

John in a post just above says the US was a pressed disc. Based on his info. I cancelled my UK order for the US. Boy you can't win. Anyway it's on the way so I will let you know. At the time it was listed as an import.

I gave this a listen on Spotify today and wonder if Newman will ever write a different score ever again.
I like Thomas Newman. Have done for years. But I think he's become even more predictable than Horner at his most laziest.

I love it. I don't think it's lazy, but he doesn't delve into a lot of new territory.

I think "The TCBS" is an awesome cue (it's also reprised in the album's final track, "Helheimr (End Crawl)"). "Fellowship" is a gorgeous cue. I love smaller intimate bits like "Geoffrey" / "Dark Magic."

It's all kind of in OSCAR & LUCINA and VICTORIA & ABDUL territory for me. I love both those scores as well, so it was a good purchase for me. No interest in the film itself, honestly!

Thanks, edwzoomom! That is a deal.

I haven't seen the film, I'm a bit underwhelmed with the score. I've listened to it twice and it hasn't left a big impression on me.
