Composer John Barry tackles a rare western subject in his celebrated career, anchoring the score with “The Man In The Mask”, sung in the Main Title by country superstar Merle Haggard and featuring lyrics by Dean Pitchford (Academy Award-winning songs for Fame) and harmonica soloist Paul Jones (of Manfred Mann fame). MCA Records released an album in 1981 running just 27 minutes, but managed to create a dynamic record that included several rousing selections from John Barry’s score, the John Barry/Merle Haggard ballads and - of course - that legendary Rossini theme. After years of exhaustive searches for session masters proved unsuccessful, Intrada worked with ITV and current soundtrack license holder UMG to finally premiere the rare 1981 album in CD format, working from pristine copies of the album itself (even these masters remain AWOL) and utilizing state-of-the-art NoNoise technology that addressed all surface noise without sacrificing any vivid dynamics of the original score, which was recorded in France under Barry’s direction. Though the album is admittedly brief, it remains a sensational listening experience! Flipper-style booklet cover features original MCA album artwork plus alternate campaign with liner notes by John Barry authority, Jon Burlingame. CD produced by Douglass Fake, Roger Feigelson performs executive producer chores. Dan Wallin records and mixes, John Barry composes and conducts. Intrada Special Collection CD available while quantities and interest remain!

30 years waiting, NOW we can pay for an LP-transfer... AT LAST!

Every Barry score sounds the same! I find the samples rather enjoyable. Nice of them to drop the price for a very short score. Though I might have preferred an $8 dollar digital release for a 24 minute program.

The source notwithstanding, the samples sound very good - better than I've ever heard them before.

After 37 years of waiting, I'm very grateful to finally have this score on CD.

I've spoken with Doug before about how extensively they search for good masters. I'm certain they did everything they could. The tapes are probably sitting in the same landfill as Raise The Titanic.

I bought the LP in 1981 after I spent good money to see the movie and I don't really need a CD that's not an expansion. Heck, I made my own good-enough CD transfer years ago. But I am probably going to buy this CD anyway, just like I bought the Buck Rogers CD, even though I'd owned that LP for decades. Stupid toxic nostalgia draining my wallet.

You say that now, but I know when the dulcet tones of Merle Haggard's voice reach your ears, you'll consider it money well-spent.

Quoting these cryptic words "working from pristine copies of the album itself (even these masters remain AWOL)" it sounds like the masters are another tragic loss in the UMG vault fire.

Anything with a song in it worries me. Intrada released disappointing versions of two of my very favorite movie songs, with Mackenna's Gold (poor pop-like version of Turkey Buzzard instead of the far better European album release) and River of No Return with missing content. Sometimes having something is better than having nothing, but sometimes not. Now the American LP of Mackenna has been released on CD, the superior European version is probably going to stay unreleased for good.
Fortunately, this Lone Ranger song is not much good to begin with, so whether it's one version or another might not matter much.

It's the version that has been released on the LP, period.

I wonder if Bear Family had access to a tape source when they produced their Merle Haggard box set:

Whatever happened to Klinton Spilsbury?

According to Wikipedia:

"An article about [Spilsbury] in The Los Angeles Times in 1989 revealed that he had spent some time in Europe and was working as a model. He had hopes to revive his career as an actor, but admitted in the article that he was not having much luck. He has intermittently coached acting workshops at the Herpolscheimer Academy in Vancouver.

In 2013 when a reboot film, The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer was released, Spilsbury was sought out by media sources but declined to comment. According to Variety, Spilsbury was working as a photographer in Los Angeles at the time

Although I've waited all these years for this release there is no way I'm going to shell out £30+ for 20 mins or so for John Barry's score. CD's can play over 70 mins of music couldn't they have coupled it with something else?

You guys are behaving like a bunch of depressing butt-hurt sissies!!

Intrada has done a marvelous job. They stated several times that this is all there is. A legendary release indeed.

Plus I find the alternate cover art STUNNING. Thank you Intrada!

Not sure what you're getting at here. This is a direct transfer from LP so content/mix will be identical.

I had this score on cassette years ago...in fact, I picked it up at Best Buy's bargain bin for $1.99! Not sure whatever happened to the tape, but it was never a favorite Barry score for me. I'll skip this round. Though, for all of you that love this score...happy listening!

This is a transfer of a pristine copy of the old vinyl LP?

You could have fooled me. Samples sound great!

If I remember correctly from the LP it seemed Ambush was titled incorrectly as this was actually the music for The Breaking of Silver?
