With CREED II coming out I thought I'd start this thread. I love them all, but ROCKY and ROCKY BALBOA are my favorites. And yes I'm counting CREED.smile

Of the ones I've seen (which is just about all of them), I'd have to say Rocky. A classic through and through.

4,1,3,2,6
4: The best score. Vince DiCola's adrenaline on testosterone on steroids in a ram-aired turbo. Also have very fond associations with this film. And it's totally over the top and cartoonish. Contrary to all the other films in this franchise, this film will in future require explaining on the political climate it was made in. So it's an odd beast, which makes it even more fun.
1: The original. All character. A very endearing story, very well acted.
3: Colourful and almost a cartoon come to life. It has the looks that I love so much about first half to mid eighties.
2: It has the look of what I like about the 70s.
6: Despite the look of a horrible decade of what will be a horrible century, it's back to story and characters that still makes me deeply appreciate this film. Rocky has matured and wised up to life. It is a beautiful and worthy end to one of cinema's most likeable characters. I know he returns in "Creed" but that is a different series to me in which I'm not interested. I don't like the current trend of spin offs.

Then there is 5: Everything that's wrong with the 90s. The cliches don't work anymore. A sitcom without the laughtrack, and worst of all: rap. Everything 90s had to have (c)rap especially if it was supposed to have "street credibility". 5 is the bad exception to an otherwise solidly entertaining

ROCKY (1976, Avildsen) is my favorite Rocky movie. It's a real film classic and can stand on its own.

Rocky II

The first, obviously. It's the only truly "good" film of the lot; the others are more generic sports movies (albeit enjoyable for other reasons -- have a particular nostalgic soft spot for IV). Haven't seen any of the CREEDs yet.

I've liked almost all of them, despite some of the later ones being nothing more than a few fights and training montages (yes ROCKY 4, I'm looking at you) and 5 being pretty bad.
I would rate them thusly...
1 = ROCKY II - the one I saw first at the cinema and overall, so the one that made the biggest impression on me. It's my favourite score from the series too. Redemption is fantastic and Vigil cuts deep. I blasted that old LP something ruthless in my younger days (and still do).
2 = ROCKY - I can see why people would rate this top. It's a great rags to riches story and really caught that bleak, lonely/hopeless 70's vibe perfectly.
3 = ROCKY 4 - it's quite rubbish, consisting of two fights and some montages, but it's short and sweet and I do love the Vince DiCola score and songs.
4/5 = I'd say I enjoyed ROCKY BALBOA and CREED about the same. Both good, solid emotional dramas with some boxing thrown in for good measure.
6 = ROCKY 3 - I know it's the one with Mr T and Hulk Hogan and Mickey dies, but I can't say I've seen this one much over the years. It might be better than I remember it?
The one with Tommy Gunn and the street fight is the only one I thought was rubbish. Didn't enjoy it AT ALL!

It's interesting that for both ROCKY and RAMBO, the first films are great; ripe with social commentary. Whereas the sequels remove most of that, and reduce it to more generic genre fare instead. Not that that can't be enjoyable too...just sayin'.

I think ROCKY II stays in the same universe as 1.
It's about dealing with the fame and fortune and has darker moments too (Adrian's pregnancy problems etc).
3 was the start of the lighter jinks and stuff, until 6 grounded things again a bit.

Yeah, II is a decent film, but it doesn't have the kind of raw, gritty, social realism-part of the first -- not only 'rags-to-riches', but dealing with issues like alienation, survivial and self-awareness. I also love the way the CITY plays a big role as a character in it.

That's Hollywood. Anything popular goes mainstream. It's all about the mighty $$$$$$$$.

My favorite is Rocky III. Then again it's the only one I've seen.

Creed is not really a spin-off....in fact they may as well have called it "Rocky VII". It's as much a continuation of the story as Rocky II was to the original.

Yes, I know what you mean... there is just something about IV... it's the shortest one, little more than a propaganda video clip for the Reagan America in the 1980s, with the suavest, coolest Rocky and a terminator like opponent who is also "the enemy" and doesn't give a damn about killing anyone in the ring. It is completely over the top, but stylishly made and it never fails to entertain. :-)

Very good point, Thor.
The city of Philadelphia really is another character in the film.

Rocky IV of course.

Haven't seen them all though.

I love them all, but ROCKY and ROCKY BALBOA are my favorites.

I totally agree with henry's initial post, as regards the both the films and their music. ROCKY is the best because it introduces the indelible character and his iconic theme. And ROCKY BALBOA is second because Conti makes such great nostalgic use of that theme in a story filled with longing, regret, and finally a measure of redemption and triumph.

1. III - the first one I saw in the theater and it's a great, emotional journey. Mr. T is fabulous and in the best shape of his life.

2. The original: for all the usual reasons.

3. Rocky Balboa: what a fantastic return to the character and a very dignified coda to the character in his own series.

4. IV: it's a guilty pleasure. It has no real story and it's ridonkulous, but there's something about it.

5. II: it's actually kinda dull.

6. V: I don't hate it, but it is cringeworthy. The Subway to Heaven and Micky's visitation is just awful, but the "flashback" to Mick giving Rocky the glove cuff link (which was new to me...) was very touching.

A not so nice review of Creed 2 in Hollywood Reporter's Nov.19th,2018 magazine. Though the reviewer does say how much he liked hearing Conti's original theme utilized.

So, has anybody seen "Chuck" (2016) starring Liev Schreiber as Chuck Wepner whose surprise fight with Muhammad Ali inspired Stallone to write "Rocky"? The film had a brief showing at some film festivals in 2016 and is now on DVD. The fight scenes are pretty good and Schreiber is a convincing Wepner. There's a moment that Wepner goes to the cinema to see "Rocky" and brags to everyone that he's the original Rocky. There's even an actor who plays Stallone that recreates Wepner's meeting with him. As a big Rocky fan, I appreciated the authenticity that is in this film. And I think it is a valuable offshoot of the franchise.
