I am proud to have been named (although he got a letter wrong) in positive terms by Jeff Bond himself! See? Positive, productive posts which you sweat blood for CAN pay off in the end! Let that be a lesson to you all.

Tom, I would obviously "quite like to have" the LOST IN SPACE box set, but I haven't touched the 15-disc STAR TREK set in about a year. Still, I'll happily accept it as a birthday present. It isn't until August, so you've all got plenty of time to think about it.

Next year, at the same time, THE INVADERS!

I've been enjoying this set since its release (thank you, La-La Land!), with the Leith Stevens material being a particular favorite (second only to John William's "The Crash" score for me.)

The booklet refers to the episode "Rescue" as Steven's final work for the series, but he actually has a composer credit on a subsequent episode, "The Chase" (which I think was the last episode produced for the first season.) I watched "The Chase" on DVD not too long ago, mostly to check out the music, but none of it jumped out at me as being original; in fact, I could have sworn it was all recycled library cues (the last five minutes was definitely scored with Williams material from "The Crash.") But I'm guessing if he got a credit, there must have been some original music in there somewhere.

I'm also crazy about the Robert Prince cues from "Nightmare."

I don't think that's how it works. If a composer's reused cues come to a certain percentage of the music in the episode, they get credited. I'm not sure what that percentage is.

Yes, 1960s TV music credits are notoriously misleading--tracked episodes often credited the composer who contributed the most music but the formulas for working even that idea out didn't seem too reliable....

Well one explanation on the GIANTS set was that...there were damaged elements but in the LINER NOTES to VOYAGE, it is stated that the music for GIANTS was found relatively intact....so...why then do we have so little from episodes such as FRAMED (four minutes), UNDERGROUND (just over five min), MANHUNT (9 min), and etc. None of the new scores released seem to be over 20 min and it's disappointing and embarrassing. At least VOYAGE is mostly represented by these scores with only a few major cues missing (mostly the action music from MONSTER FROM THE INFERNO and the search music from DEADLY DOLLS and RESCUE as well as the rising tension action from LOST BOMB and of course, the first season music). This set is far better than GIANTS' set which remains highly annoying to me and one of the biggest disappointing merchandise I ever bought from any series. I do wish they would release another GIANTS set and have FRAMED, UNDERGROUND, MANHUNT, and maybe snippets missed in INIDU released. Almost every score on GIANTS is butchered and I do not believe the excuse is that the material was not in good shape as the liner notes said most of GIANTS was found in useable form. It's just disappointing that is what we got: half a dream.

As I wrote in another thread, I got this nearly a year ago and forgot all about it.

At any rate, I am resisting, and have listened to discs 1 and 2 so far. I am not paying attention to specific scores or composers, I'm just absorbing the music one disc at a time. So far, I like virtually everything I'm hearing.

It does have that Irwin Allen sound. The first score on disc 3 would fool me into thinking this is "Lost in Space."

That's Richard LaSalle's "The Mechanical Man".

Onya - you big dummy - didn't Graham Watt tell you to hate LaSalle's music because it sounds written by a 3-year-old?

Numbskull! Nutmeg! Nincompoop!
You Nickel-plated Neanderthal Ninny!

Could there be a supplementary volume issued for Giants? To cover more of the music for the series.

The episode "The Shell Game" aired on Me-TV cable in the US last night and what a treat to be able to enjoy Joseph Mullendore's charming little score located on disc 2 of this treasure set.

Why did Mullendore sometimes go under "Mullendore" on TV credits? Or Devol, or Van Cleave? What gives?

They had to pay for the extra letters out of their own pockets.

Must we all have first names with everybody? big grin

Bear in mind that some guys who list a first name sometimes alter such in subsequent years.

Jerrald Goldsmith > Jerry Goldsmith
Johnny Williams > John Williams
Johnny Mandel > John Mandel
Richard Bennett > Richard Rodney Bennett
Patrick John Scott > John Scott
Piero Morgan > Piero Piccioni
Krzysztof Komeda > Komeda > Christopher Komeda

I could concoct multiple theories about why, but ultimately I suspect these are due to contractual reasons or publishing regulations.

I heard that Frank De Vol got the suggestion from a friend or someone to go by just his last name. The idea was that it would make him sound classy and esoteric, like a top fashion designer, a Renaissance painter, or for that matter a classical composer.

For me, it had the opposite effect. When I'd see his billing on The Brady Bunch or some such, I thought DeVol might be a company with anonymous composers working an assembly line.

Yeah, it was a prestige thing. Much like "Karloff" back at the height of his fame or when Ironweed was coming out, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep were announced by last names.

Not that "Mullendore" was a household name or anything....

Am I correct in thinking that LAND OF THE GIANTS was the only one of Irwin Allen's shows that did NOT use any music cues from any 20th Century-Fox feature films?

I know that cues from LOST IN SPACE turned up in five or six of the episodes, but I think those were the only instances of "outside" library cues used in GIANTS - is that right?

anyway, looking for info on the one LOST IN SPACE bit of music not on cd: it came from some movie and was in the SKY PIRATE and WRECK OF THE ROBOT (when Judy sees Will finishing putting the robot together). I think it's from either REMARKABLE MR PENNYWISE and/or A NICE LITTLE BANK ROBBERY? any info appreciated
