I know that there probably already are numerous posts about that
OSCAR year...in which Empire lost to Fame...but was there any original score for FAME????The songs are nice ok..but the score compared to a milestone score like Empire..give me a breakwink

Hey moolik, it's the Oscars. I didn't even know that FAME won that year, nor that EMPIRE lost. I didn't even know they were nominated.

Having said that, I suppose we should be outraged after seeing how - thanks to that year's Oscar fiasco - Michael Gore went on to become one of the most successful composers in history, while John Williams was abandoned by the industry, his last credit being one of the songs from the stage show "Carrie: The Musical".

But no sour grapes, man! Who would want to be a successful anything in Hollywood today? I think that Gore is less "happy" being part of the industry. It has stifled his creativity, whereas John Williams, even at age 90, can always make that move to Bollywood in the hope of getting a hit song while begging for rice in the street.

I hate the Oscars. Alfred Hitchcock would still be deservedly considered a talentless hack if it weren't for the dozens of "Best Director" Oscars he won throughout his pitiful career.

How could FAME and Empire even be in the same category? One contained songs, the other an orchestral score.

It's ALL music though.
And some of the songs on the FAME soundtrack are way better to dance to than the songs on THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK soundtrack.

Graham Watt, do you have a permit for that weapons-grade sarcasm?

This is why they used to have the Adapted Score or Song Score category.

Midnight Express won over Superman.

Say no more...

Both brilliant scores for different reasons, so nothing like the FAME/EMPIRE debacle. I, too, have problems remembering anything of Gore's score for FAME, but it's been ages since I saw the film. It's obviously a bit like FULL MONTY, where people voted for the songs rather than the score.

Yes, I have often wondered why FAME was even nominated for "Original Score"? Songs, hey, sure, by all means... but score??

You're all wrong. THAT YEAR, it should not have gone to 'Empire Strikes Back'. It should also not have gone to 'Fame'. It was meant to go to Philippe Sarde, for 'TESS'.

Oh well, at least Williams lost justifiably when Conti's THE RIGHT STUFF won the Oscar three years later.

Agree! Tess was the best 'original' score.

Tess must be the hipster pick for Best Original Score, as it's had no posts or threads bumped since 2013...going by the infallible FSM search engine...

...Empire Strikes Back, on the other hand...one post and three topics every five seconds...

Glad to see I'm not alone in feeling this way. TESB is awesome, but Tess is high art (and contains what is possibly my favorite love theme of all time).

After Tess, I'd rate Altered States as most Oscar-worthy that year.

ALTERED STATES

I have all three.

Possibly the only year three nominees are in my collection!

TESS gets my vote too. An absolutely beautiful score that rarely gets a mention on this site. Sarde continues to be one of my very favourite composers...his 2013 score for Bertrand Tavernier's film "Quai D'Orsay" is wonderful.

Yes TESS is a lovely score and ALTERED STATES is a highly sophisticated and complex one too.
All I like a lot.
But THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK just pushed it a bit further...it was so well written and "attached "to the movie.
Well here comes "taste" again.
Anything but FAMEsmile

Concerning MIDNIGHT EXPRESS and SUPERMAN...well I love SUPERMAN but in that case I kinda understand why it went to MIDNIGHT EXPRESS. Its a highly effective and "new"score.

As good as ESB is, it never thrilled me in the way SW did.
