Director Lucrecia Martel had been in talks with Marvel Studios to direct BLACK WIDOW, and she told Marvel she hated their movie music, "... the soundtrack of Marvel films is quite horrendous. Maybe we disagree on this but it’s really hard to watch a Marvel film. It’s painful to the ears to watch Marvel films.”

Lucrecia, your words of wisdom are music to my eyes.

Maybe she's talking about (loud and busy) audio mix as a whole, not the music per se?

and yet can actually watch that crap? Weird...

weak music for terrible films - seems like a solid match.

The scores of the first phase did not do anything for me.

But from Phase 2 onwards and definitely in Phase 3 Marvel came around and put a lot more care into choosing composers and telling them what they could do.

Does she mean the music, though, or the sound in general?

I guess she hasn't seen Black Panther yet.

I don't disagree with her but is publicly trash talking your potential employer (products) the best way to get hired? I also agree phase 2 (or is it 3) scores have been "better" and some are enjoyable, but a far cry from the classic scores we got from Williams, Goldsmith and Horner.

Since when do film directors know anything about music?

It's often a far cry from what these composers hired are even capable of.

You know what? I like them for the most part. Silvestri's scores are always really great: Infinity War is both epic and heartbreaking. Tyler and Giacchino also contributed some fine work (MG's Dr. Strange is one of my favorites). Beck really surprised me, though, with Ant-Man. Fabulous. Same with Tyler Bates' first Guardians score.

I don't think I've ever said "this isn't as good as Williams or Goldsmith." Because that's a paper argument. The music suits the films and I find them entertaining and enjoyable to listen to, for the most part (Jackman's scores did little for me). I honestly don't need much more than that.

I really like some of the Marvel soundtracks. Sure, there's nothing groundbreaking (and precious little particularly fresh) but Dark World and Ragnarok's scores were pretty darn fun to listen to. Silvestri's First Avenger is a fine work, too imo. Yes, there are some glaringly lame scores here and there...same with any group of superhero movies.

I LOVE the MCU (overall far better than the DC movies besides Dark Knight, Man of Steel, and of course the first two Supermans), and thought Infinity War was one of the best movies this past year.

But I'm biased, as I've read these comics long before they were movies.

Thanks Jim, I needed that laugh today.

Wasn't there some level of boasting as to how different Mark Mothersbaugh's Thor was going to be? Seems like that score just came and went like all the others.

I can't remember a note from any of them after they're finished. Granted, I haven't seen all of them (nor do I want to) but the ones I've seen have had pretty indistinct music. The end credits suite from one of them was a blatant Williams pastiche as I recall. That's as close as it gets to me remembering anything though.

Well, she's not the only one. I'm sorry, but I do not 'dig' modern super-hero scores myself. I have no objection to them as film scores, but they're not the kind of film scores I take home.

Cheers

She hated the Avatar score too:

"Recently, I was watching Avatar on a plane, and I noticed not only how bad the score was but also how terribly the filmmakers use the music to underscore every action. It becomes a safety net. The film sweeps us into this exciting visual world, but the music is used to comfort and reassure viewers. In fact, the music is actually working against the power of the imagery, dampening its potential. Sound is what makes cinema three-dimensional, but many filmmakers seem to use music to flatten the image. We wanted to avoid this in Zama. Our intention was for the music to always be in contention with the imagery." — Lucrecia Martel

I like the sound of this woman. After the Elfman and Goldenthal Batman scores, I'm sorry but the superhero genre has GENERIC music. If ANY of those films had even the slightest thing in common with those Batman (not to mention John Williams Superman) scores they would have been discussion for years, with us all frothing all over them and demanding expansions.

And most these days get mmmm ok. Which is why the last superhero score fo me was Batman Forever.
