I really like the new Menken song too! This music video for it makes me so much more interested in seeing the film than any of the trailers have, in fact...
Naomi Scott honestly seems like she might be the best performance in the film, and she really can sing, to boot. The comparison to excessively auto-tuned Emma Watson is striking.
People saying the song is too poppy and “of its time” but obviously have no problem with A Whole New World is kinda funny. I think it’s a great new Menken addition that perfectly fits Jasmine’s character.
Yavar
A AWNW aside, the new song is terribly out of place, bland and generic. It doesn't mesh with the rest of the score at all.
BTW, if you like the actresses singing she co-starred in a Disney MOD called Lemonade Mouth where she contributed her musical talents. She was also in a canceled series called Terra Nova which only last one season.
Saw it last night with my totally Disney nut daughter (her second viewing) and thought it was great. The songs were fine for me with no worries about comparisons, and I thought from the start that Will Smith was the perfect fit for both the live action genie and worthy successor to Robin Williams. I also thought they had the right amount of homage without lessening Smith's right for them to be his style.
And above all else my favourite song in the whole thing - Arabian Nights - was expanded! I hate how woefully short it is in the original.
The only minus for me was Jafar. I would have preferred an older ethnic version somewhere between Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. I thought we could have swapped him with the lead without noticing the difference, so I guess that was the idea.. parallels and all that. But it meant he had less presence for me. Hopefully the live action Hunchback of Notre Dame will do this better for me.
But Menken's music was great as ever. The new song didn't jar for me, and I liked the intros that we got for some such as Prince Ali.
For all the pre-bashing the film and Smith got it seems to be going over pretty well with audiences. As far as the villain, I'm sure that was a political decision. He couldn't be to ethnic or dark (scary) looking, less you bring on the wrath of the middle east.

MOD? don't you mean DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie)? Oh, she was the Pink Power Ranger (in the recent movie.)
Yeah I was unexpectedly a fan of the recent Power Rangers film (it actually took the time to build up characters rather than being all silly action! The Transformers movies could really learn a lot from it). Her character was very well done.
It seems she also had a decent singing career well before she was even the Pink Power Ranger much less Princess Jasmine:

I have no idea why the original lyric, "Brush up your Sunday salaam" was changed to "Friday salaam", destroying the beauty of the original's alliteration.
Muslims worship on Fridays.
According to the dictionary:
salaam noun sa·?laam | \ s?-'läm Definition of salaam (Entry 1 of 2) 1 : an obeisance performed by bowing very low and placing the right palm on the forehead 2 : a salutation or ceremonial greeting in the East salaam verb salaamed; salaaming; salaams Definition of salaam (Entry 2 of 2) transitive verb : to greet or pay homage to with a salaam intransitive verb : to perform a salaam
I saw the new stage version Menken wrote for Broadway, with several songs, and concepts that he and Howard Ashman conceived for the film, which were later abandoned, but reinstated for the show. However, this live action film version seems to have abandoned those again, and is based more on the released animated version. With cleaned up lyrics, of course...
I always liked Ashman’s never used, demo song, “Call Me a Princess.” Very funny...

Ido wish Jafar's version of "Prince Ali," hadn't been dropped, although I can understand why they did it.
I've played this score a few times now and I really like it. It's grown on me a lot. This and the Lion King are my two favorite scores of the year by far.
