Well, the late Jóhann Jóhannsson is unfortunately no longer an option, though he might have been quite an interesting choice.

So then, who should compose the epic score that finally launches this seminal series properly into the mainstream popular consciousness?

I suppose Hans Zimmer and/or Benjamin Wallfisch ought to have the inside track, and quite frankly either or both would likely prove worthy of the task.

What would really be most appropriate is if Vangelis got the gig as reparation for not being tapped for Villeneuve's "Blade Runner 2049".

I should think Graeme Revell and Brian Tyler are out of any level of consideration due to the fact that both already did some of their career best work for the old Sci-Fi Channel mini-series. And needless to say Toto ain't returning, though their score was the singular best thing to come from David Lynch's rather miserable Dune adaptation.

As here we can hopefully have a little fun speculating on who might compose the perfect regal/ethnic Dune soundtrack of their dreams, I'll cite and tentatively rank some of the options and my top picks for making the Spice flow:

01. Vangelis
02. Hans Zimmer
03. Clint Mansell

65. Tomandandy

So, before an official announcement, who would you imagine as the ideal composer for the dark palace corridors and perilous desert vistas of Frank Herbert's dense science fiction magnum opus of political intrigue and messianic prophecy?

John Williams obviously.

All kidding aside it'll either be Hildur Guðnadóttir (she's collaborated with Jóhann Jóhannsson before and also scored last year's Sicario sequel) or Hans Zimmer and/or those of his ilk. But who knows?

Bear McCreary, although I’d be thrilled if Zimmer were on board.

John Scott.

Christopher Young.

John Williams (Would love to see him get his composing teeth stuck into something this epic, imaginative, and working with Villeneuve).

Vangelis would indeed be something, but so unlikely, it seems impossible.

An interesting choice would be Angelo Badalamenti, I think. He can do big, symphonic stuff, but also ethereal electronic majesty -- like the fantastic GOLD COAST.

Pink Floyd would be excellent -- and an "ode" to Jodorowsky's original DUNE plan. Alas, the likelihood of seeing Waters, Gilmour and Mason reunite for that (especially with the absence of Wright) is zero.

I like Pink Floyd and Daft Punk being thrown out here. How exciting it would be to hear what either could bring to this movie. I think there are some other great options out there:

James Newton Howard
Bear McCreary
Christopher Young (I think he could really surprise us)

And, of course, John Williams. I don't know if he'd be my first choice, but he could would provide some wonderful themes, I'm sure.

Has anyone mentioned Harry Gregson-Williams? His work on Kingdom of Heaven was wonderful.

Giacchino would be ideal of course; McCreary would probably be quite good too. Tyler's last crack at the Dune universe was great, still some of his best work, so I wouldn't be opposed to hearing what else he could do in that vein.

I don't know who. But Dune, as I remember the book, is full of the kind of thinking embodied by deeply embedded cult group-thought.

The music would have to invent a way of sifting through all those nether regions, as well as provide a unique theme to encompass the whole.

Not since John Williams' Star Wars score has this been done, although do correct me if you think I'm wrong. If anything, the Dune universe would have to outdo Star Wars, because in all honesty, the sheer number of competing 'attitude states' involved is so much greater. If anything, Star Wars is a subset of Dune. Do you do this with symphonic, electronic or a mish-mash?

Star Wars did it more or less exclusively with a polished brass end. Could you do the same for the Dune environment? What I guess I'm saying is that the music of Star Wars is a major player in the whole thing and helped to lop it an extra 100 miles. I'd say that if the music for Dune II could be expansively woven into the fabric of the film in the same way then it's a winner. Could a duplicated effort be forthcoming? Not likely, but who's to say?

I know pretty much every big studio film these days is a massive gamble, but I feel a new Dune from the director of Arrival and BR2049 is just asking for trouble.
A deep, dark convoluted story with lots of unsavoury/unlikable characters and world building that will need audience time and patience, from a director who may be too cerebral and murky for modern day audiences.
It seems more geared towards Netflix or Amazon style unveiling.
Yes, Peter Jackson pulled it off with his LOTR endeavours, but I will be very surprised if this one catches on with the general cinema going audiences of the world. We'll see I guess.
As to who will score it? I can't see past Zimmer and/or Wallfisch or that Scandi girl assistant to JJ.

Elliot Goldenthal would have been my first choice.

I am tired of Zimmer even if I like a few of his scores.

I am pretty sure that it will be Zimmer who will get the job though.

I'd also prefer Cliff Martinez to get a chance over Zimmer for sure - if Martinez could somehow return to his Solaris glory, but something new and different could be interesting.

Otherwise, Brian Eno would interest me as well.
