I know this has never been released but I'm wondering if it is even a possibility given so many other unreleased soundtracks have come about due to this site.
A very good friend of mine worked on this score, indirectly, and told me there were several versions of the song A TIME FOR LOVE recorded, including a bossa nova style one with Stan Getz and Mundell Lowe playing along.

Several years ago he reached out to see if the recordings still existed. He was told they were the property of Warner Bros. and all files, stems etc. were kept in the Midwest (Kansas or Oklahoma, I think). The person he spoke with was going to investigate but never got back to him.

Would love if someone could add anything to this.

Since Warner Bros. produced and copyrighted the film, it makes sense that they would have the score elements. Soundtrack releases from 1960s-era Warner films are slow in coming. The last one I recall was CHEYENNE AUTUMN from Intrada in October 2016.

Yes. And it's too bad FSM no longer issues CD's (their WAIT UNTIL DARK is a prized one!) or it may have seen a release by now.

I tried to find info on this film at imdb.com. Nothing under the title "An American Dream" but after searching cast members, I found it under the title "I'll See You In Hell, Darling". More like a nightmare than a dream.

While I never saw An American Dream / See You in Hell, Darling, I see it was one of those William Conrad Productions (and some of these I have seen, such as My Blood Runs Cold)

These Conrad-produced flicks began to be screened during 1965 and lasted until 1968.

1965

  • Two on a Guillotine, January 13th, 1965 - music by Max Steiner
  • My Blood Runs Cold, March 24th, 1965 - music by George Duning
  • Brainstorm, May 5th, 1965 - music by George Duning

    1966

  • See You in Hell, Darling, August 31st, 1966 - music by Johnny Mandel

    1967

  • First to Fight, January 25th, 1967 - music by Fred Steiner
  • A Covenant with Death, February 15th, 1967 - music by Leonard Rosenman
  • The Cool Ones, April 12th, 1967 - music by Ernie Freeman

    '67/1968

  • Chubasco, June '67 (U.K.) but June '68 (U.S.A.) - music by William Lava
  • Countdown, August '67 (U.K.) but February '68 (U.S.A.) - music by Leonard Rosenman
  • Assignment to Kill, May '68 (U.K.) but December '68 (U.S.A.) - music by William Lava

An interesting run of 10 films in less than 5 years, with 2 scores each from Duning, Rosenman & Lava (plus 1 apiece by 2 different Steiners smile ). There appears to have been distribution issues near the end with the U.K. getting them screened almost a year before their showings in the U.S.

A Johnny Mandel score added into this group makes for a rather impressive and tasteful selection of composers. If I was a producer/director 50 years ago, then I'd wish to have had Mandel & Rosenman & Duning write music for my works!

I've been desiring a soundtrack album from My Blood Runs Cold for over 30 years when I first saw this movie on commercial UHF broadcast TV around 1987.
And I've been wanting the same since 1998 regarding Rosenman's Countdown
I feel sure that I'd love Mandel's music for this (so-called) "American Dream" on disc, too.
Seeing that none of the titles above have had soundtracks, though, perhaps the master tapes from their recording sessions are not in the Warner archives since these pictures were independently produced?

I've seen the movie, too. I enjoyed it, with the fascinating, audacious opening 30 minutes or so being the best part (and Eleanor Parker is excellent). After the opening, the movie settles into being more of a conventional noir. From what I recall, Johnny Mandel's main theme/song is excellent and his score was solid. He was a great composer.

Mandel arranged and conducted the movie's song "A Time For Love" for Tony Bennett. Beautiful harmonic structure.
For those of you who don't have Bennett's "Movie Song Album" check it out.
In many cases the composer also arranged and conducted. Mandel arranged "Shadow" and Emily", Neal Hefti did "Girl Talk", "The Gentle Rain" with Luiz Bonfa, "Never Too Late" by David Rose and "The Pawnbroker" by Quincy Jones.
So happy when it was released on CD.
I played the LP so much you could almost see through it.
