I am the host of the podcast “The Baton: A John Williams Musical Journey,” which began on January 2. The podcast is devoted to John Williams’ music career, from his first film in 1959 to the present. Each episode will be devoted to one movie in Williams’ lengthy career, 107 films and counting. Think of it as a biography of John Williams, told through his music.

You can hear the first five episodes now at https://thebatonpodcast.podbean.com/. You can also subscribe on iTunes and Spotify.

Episode 1 sets up the premise of the podcast and details John Williams’ life before he tackled his first film score. Episode 2 officially starts the journey through his career with a listen to Williams’ score for his debut film “Daddy-O.” Episode 3 analyzes the score for his second film “I Passed For White.”

In Episode 4, John Williams returned to the teenybopper genre with "Because They're Young," which was trying hard to mimic "The Blackboard Jungle." Episode 5, out today, shows how John Williams creates good music for a bad film: "The Secret Ways."

This podcast will examine Williams’ career in chronological order. This way, you’ll appreciate the journey toward the scores that made him famous. Yes, I know this is similar to "The Goldsmith Odyssey" podcast, but I think we're generally approaching our subjects in a different way.

Though I hope my podcast appeals to the general public, I’m extremely interested to know what film music fans think of it. You can post comments here in the forums or on the podcast’s app. You can also send me an email at jeffswim@aol.com if you don’t want to comment publicly.

New episodes go live every Wednesday. Thanks for listening!

I've long wondered when/if someone would do this for Williams -- I'm so glad you've taken up the task!

I've listened to the first three episodes and am enjoying this fresh exposure to the early work of John Williams. I know the film titles, but have never run across the films themselves so I am hearing this music for the first time.

DADDY-O surprised me as it comes across musically as something akin to film noir with that intense "crime jazz" style that would be a hallmark of t.v. detective shows in the late 50's. I was expecting a little more pop-rock in the music but what we get instead is much better. It may not sound like the Williams we know...but it is great stuff regardless.

I PASSED FOR WHITE seems to be Williams striving for a film music sound based on what had been and was being done for films of a melodramatic nature. His main theme sounds like he's trying to remember "Laura's Theme" but then gives up and resolves it in his own way. The super-intense musical gestures were seen as a necessity back in the day when either the visuals or the performances weren't putting across the emotional anxiety a director (or producer) wanted to communicate to the audience. Nowadays these outbursts don't work as audiences have grown a little more sophisticated and filmmakers are a little better at communicating emotions by subtler means.

So far an excellent job. I also appreciate the interview clips and other ephemera (like the BACHELOR FATHER music) as well as the solid musical knowledge (which I lack). I will keep tuning in.

I listened to the first two shows and Daddy-O sounds like the companion piece to Elmer Bernstein's Johnny Staccato.

I like the 25 minutes format because it reminds me the television format of the Fifties: short but effective.

I hope everyone has been enjoying "The Baton: A John Williams Musical Journey." Year One is coming to an end, and I am beyond excited for Year Two.

Thanks to everyone who has been a part of this journey since the beginning, for those who told their friends to tune in and especially to all my guest co-hosts.

Year Two begins -- appropriately -- on New Year's Day with my "E.T." episode. Until then, please take a listen to the final episode of 2019, a discussion of the film "Heartbeeps" and the very fine score by John Williams. See you in 2020 with 56 more episodes, all available on iTunes, Spotify, YouTube and Podbean.

I thoroughly enjoyed the episodes that covered the Seventies era: my favorite era for Williams.
Too bad, you didn't appreciate the strength of The Missouri Break that that I considered as one of Williams’ finest scores.
Different strokes for different folks.

Usually, when I find a score to not be very good in the film, I listen to it away from the film to see if I appreciate it more. I didn't really like it, but I tried as hard as I could to keep my opinion out of it and just detail the history of the score.

Possibly the weird Marlon Brando performance spilled over into my thoughts about the score.
