I'm hoping Jon will write a full obituary for FSM.

Jon already wrote one for Variety and asking him to do another, when he had to do one for his dear friend already, is kind of insensitive.

"Last night I was listening to 'The Luck of the Irish' (Mockridge/Kritzerland) and on checking the credits I saw it was Nick Redman who produced it. So I'd unwittingly been playing a tribute to him. And a lovely score it is."

***

Basil, as I wrote in a Facebook post, how can I ever adequately thank someone for making one of my deepest dreams come true? Once upon a time, discussing 20th Century Fox scores, I told Nick of my lifelong love of O. HENRY'S FULL HOUSE by the celebrated Alfred Newman and the totally obscure THE LUCK OF THE IRISH by Newman's unsung and all-but-forgotten collaborator, Mr. Mockridge. I always thought the two soundtracks would complement each other on an album, even if I would probably be the only one to buy a copy. (Certainly I would be the only one who'd ever heard or heard of the Mockridge LUCK.) Imagine the joy of my surprise some years later when Nick told me that he'd suggested my two holy grails to Bruce Kimmel for a Kritzerland CD, and would I be interested in writing the liner notes? Wherever Nick is now, I'm sure his heart is warmed to know that you hear and appreciate the beauty of LUCK OF THE IRISH. I know my own heart is warmed by the knowledge, just as it will always be warmed and grateful for having been befriended by this beautiful and remarkable man.

Several years ago I mailed Nick to thank him for his wonderful work on one of my favourite Alfred Newman scores ‘The Robe’. When I was a kid in New Zealand many many years ago, I spent my precious newspaper delivery money on that 12” LP – which I still have. I didn’t expect a reply but was thrilled when one came, Nick delighted that he had helped this to happen. He would be a rare breed in today’s world.

Thank You & RIP Nick. My thoughts are with your family.

James,
I wasn't aware that Jon Burlingame had written an obituary. So, rather than the assumption inherent in your comment, perhaps it would have been more apposite to ask if I was aware that one had been written.
I shall be sure to take a look at it.
Thanks,
Stan

What truly sad news.

And to have died so young after a two-year battle with cancer.

He will be long remembered.

I only now realized that I never commented in this thread. That I was unwell myself at the time and away from the computer is my only excuse.

Belated condolences to Julie Kirgo and all of Mr. Redman's family. His championing of film music (and film) brought so much enjoyment into all our lives that it's impossible to be grateful enough. That he was taken so soon is a real tragedy.

RIP Nick Redman. frown
