The subject of the 30th annual Bard Music Festival in August is "Korngold and His World." Two entire weekends will be devoted to concerts (orchestral, vocal, and chamber), screenings, and discussions. Influences and parallels will be addressed, including the music of Newman, Waxman, Herrmann, Rozsa, and many others. A book of collected studies is likely to emerge from the event. This is big!

Bard College is located above Poughkeepsie in New York's Hudson Valley.

Sometimes I am on the wrong coast.

I'm trying to figure out how I can make a summer vacation work for this.

Amazing. Korngold deserves this kind of treatment.

The film music stigma is still alive - the NY Phil played his music when he was 15 years old...all the way until right after WW2 when the stigma took hold. They didn't play him again for 50 years!

This festival is embracing ALL of his music, film music included, which is great.

It gives me hope for future serious consideration for so many of our great composers from North to Goldsmith who are rarely celebrated in this way.

Though not strictly part of the festival, Korngold's most ambitious opera, The Miracle of Heliane, will be staged in its U.S. premiere at Bard. Five performances between July 26 and August 4. This is certainly going to be the Summer of Korngold in the Hudson Valley. The festival proper will include a semi-staged performance of the more familiar Die tote Stadt. https://fishercenter.bard.edu/events/heliane/

Miracle of Heliane finally gets a U.S. premiere! I'm looking forward to tomorrow's performance. Followed by two entire August weekends of performances and talks. Who else is going?

Too bad: I wanted to post my picture of the Korngold T-shirt they are selling! I didn't take photos, but there were also two tables full of Korngold CDs/DVDs and books. To think that when I first heard of Korngold in 1963 there was exactly ONE album in print.

Today there's a free screening of THE CONSTANT NYMPH, a film that was long out of print. Leon Botstein's essay in the new Korngold and His World volume highlights this film as central to EWK's philosophy.
