Yikes, don't miss out on the Intrada Wind and the Lion. Get that CD, you won't regret it. I love both the presentation and score, don't miss out!

I got Man who haunted himself coz i too loved film and music in the film, Graham. And it was fine on CD.

Had i the money for the soundtracks id like i wouldnt hesitate to get 11 harrowhouse, sphinx, north sea hijack and the madwoman of chaillot and medusa T and every bit of michael J i could get my hands on.

Mr Lewis did not ever write a bad score.

Graham

Bill knows of what he speaks. I have The Medusa Touch, Theatre of Blood and a couple of other promos and can’t speak highly enough of the Maesteg Maestro. (Actually Aberystwyth but what can you do?)

Maesteg has a better ring to it.
Never let details ruin a good name!

I love Michael J. Lewis's work. The Madwoman of Chaillot is absolutely sublime and contains an incredibly heartbreaking theme. Not bad for a first film score. Give credit to director Bryan Forbes for finding Lewis and fighting to hire him on such a major production. This film was not a Forbes production--he was actually hired as a replacement director.

MOBSTERS - I absolutely love Michael Small's work, but I find his later scores hit or miss, beginning about '82. Even BLACK WIDOW (1987?) is sort of mediocre for me. And this is from '91. Good nonetheless? Dramatic score or lots of Dixieland?

I'm possibly the only human on this or any planet who wishes for an expanded release of "Mobsters." It's a favorite of mine. It's a dramatic score, certainly with jazz overtones, but definitely nothing like Dixieland. It's dark and atmospheric, and the main title seems to pull you into the past. The film is pretty terrible, but I really like this score a lot.

Well said Schiffy.

WG - I'm not actually a compulsive collector of anything. You'd probably be surprised at the amount of LPs and CDs which I've not picked up in the last 45 years, just because I never got around to it.It's great for me that there are still hundreds of things on my wants list, things which have been readily available for decades. So I rarely contribute to the "Ordered, but what's next?" threads. I'm a sort of 10 CDs a year person, although I seem to have been going through a shopping spree stage for the last few months. I do have THE WIND AND THE LION on LP, but it is a great score indeed and I'm very tempted to get the full thing on CD. That would still leave about thirty Goldsmiths on my wants list, and about twenty or thirty which I actually wouldn't even want for free.

MCurry - Yes, I heard part of MOBSTERS and it's good enough late-period Michael Small.

TG, Bill, villa - I've been aware of Michael J. Lewis' music since the mid-'70s when I sneaked in (way underage) to see THEATRE OF BLOOD. The music stayed with me for years, then I got the DVD (I love the film) and finally the CD (promo). And THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT was one of the first LPs I got on a trip to 58 Dean Street in London in my teens. Cost about 25 quid back then. I grew up taping things off the telly, and MJL quickly struck me as being immediately recognizable. I picked up one of his compilation CDs years ago (the single disc one), and while I like it a lot, I felt that it was slightly overdone. I think these compilations were re-recordings done for a bigger orchestra, to showcase his themes, and for me it got a little slushy. So now that these promos are cheap for me living in Europe, I think I'll take the plunge on some. I'd like to hear the original soundtracks stripped of their re-orchestrated, lush upholstery. And with the packaging, it's sure to be bare bones.

Interesting that nobody has mentioned UNMAN, WITTERING AND ZIGO. Does nobody have it, or is it too terrible to mention? The film was great when I saw it forty years ago.

I'll be placing my order soon. Please help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope. You have until midnight tonight to find the house on haunted hill.

Surprise ending - it's done... I've ordered them! Blimus, even "cheaper than usual" stuff costs a lot when you get loads of them!

Of the list of contenders, the following bit the dust -

Gold's LAST VIKINGS/ Rosenman's DR LEAKEY - Call me a nutmeg nincompoop nit, but it's something to look forward to next Christmas.

SOLIMANO - Ditto. Scores by Francesco De Masi in my collection yesterday = 0. Scores by Francesco De Masi in my collection next week = 0. Unless AN ANGEL FOR SATAN is released tomorrow.

CRACK IN THE WORLD/ PHASE IV - Still on my wants list. But when-oh-when will I get my box set of Columbo music?

And so the winners are...

THE WIND AND THE LION

MOBSTERS

UNMAN, WITTERING AND ZIGO/ THE NAKED FACE

THE MAN WHO HAUNTED HIMSELF/ 92 IN THE SHADE

I asked about those two MJLs in particular because when I first looked, they were the only ones on offer. But at the last minute today, both THE PASSAGE and THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES were there too. I passed on them. I'll ask Santa for them.

Oh, I did get other stuff which I didn't ask you about on this thread. If you're really interested, go to the "What's New in Your Collection? - February" thread. But don't all rush at once - I haven't written it yet.

I got THE COWBOYS quite recently. Can I live now? And you didn't say I was right when I resurrected Audrey Rose yesterday. She was a sight for sore eyes.

You must buy the DRACULA Deluxe Edition by years' end.
You must then play it until your ears bleed.
Then, and only then, will I reconsider your death sentence.
Court adjourned (gavel, gavel).

I'll most certainly be getting the upcoming re-recordings done by Tadlow. It's got The Curse if Frank on it too. Great stuff.

Graham, you should participate in this previous thread:

https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=99413&forumID=1&archive=0

It asks if you acquire a disc (containing 2 composers' music) based upon one composer or another (or both).
In this case, all of those Rosenman scores paired with non-Rosenman companions.

Bill, I may actually start that De Masi thread myself, from the point of view of a virgin ignoramus. By the way, I take it you are addressing the mighty Zardoz when you refer to the ant-De Masi stance? I don't know enough about his music to give much of an opinion.

I listened to the YT links you posted. That first one seems modeled on HOUR OF THE GUN. Am I just imagining that? Not sure which came first. Whatever, I'm not an enormous fan of spaghetti, except when it's on my plate - again maybe out of ignorance. But I did come across a really lovely De Masi piece from DI CHE COLORE E IL VENTO (or something), which looks a bit like it might translate roughly (going through Spanish) as WHAT IS/ TELL ME THE COLOUR OF THE WIND. I might be asking for recommendations more in that vein.

Anyway, I passed on SOLIMANO as you know, from the cheap shop in France, but it's still "quite cheap" from the expensive shop in Spain, so, as I'm waiting waiting for Gerald Fried's THE BABY to be born in the Spanish shop at the end of the month, I might make it a more bulky order and get SOLIMANO after all, plus that thing about the colour of the wind, if anybody trustworthy says it's any good.

But the De Masi I really want is UN ANGELO PER SATANA (or something)/ AN ANGEL FOR SATAN, which I saw during a Babs Steele marathon and was totally captivated by the score - in fact by the whole film. I watched that opening credits scene of the boat moving languidly along the lake ten times. Hypnotic. But it ain't out on CD. Me myself I, and wayoutwest want this, so that makes four of us.

I don't know if I've accidentally started the De Masi thread. You may want to do a new, proper one. Some of us have to work. It's not all sun, sex and sangría, Dickie Plantagenet.

And MEDUSA is on Amazon prime too, as of a couple weeks ago. I hope I can sit still for a couple hours & watch it, very good score that deserves a closer look. It seems to be the priciest of the MJ L promos....and my cdr copy has terrible blurry, red blotchy art. So, someone please redo this...because my artwork is illegible...and my entitlement needs feeding....
;-)
