On my first night in Budapest for the Rozsa centennial in 2007, I flipped on the TV and encountered THE STRANGE LOVE OF MARTHA IVERS. (This was sheer coincidence; Rozsa was surprisingly little known in his native city.) There was music for an originally unscored stand-off near the end. And what music! It was the scourging scene from KING OF KINGS. I had to suspect a jet-lag-induced hallucination, but I'm quite certain it was real. So, yes, I can believe all the horror stories about Euro-dubbing practices! At least they substituted the right composer.

Finder 4545, thanks for the very interesting post.

A CD with Rozsa's SAHARA / BLOOD ON THE SUN would be fantastic. One can always hope .......

I don't think any label recording a Rozsa score is taking a big financial risk. His popularity is up there with Goldsmith and Williams. Record it and they will come.

I don't think its been mentioned that BLOOD ON THE SUN HD is on YouTube for free.

For those who have never seen the film, thanks for pointing that out PFK. It's the public domain print, but it will do.

YouTube says it's "HD" but I doubt that. Looks pretty good though, I hadn't seen it in years. Now if YouTube would only post a "HD" recording of the score ....... smile

The video can be HD even though the film print used might be a dupe. The BLOOD ON THE SUN HD transfer (Wartime youtube channel) is from a 16mm original print. The film's original elements were owned by Richard Feiner & Co. (from whom Craig and I licensed the Warners United States Pictures scores). Dick passed away a couple of years ago and his archive is in a total mess. Gosh only knows if the William Cagney Production titles are preserved in 35mm. He gave me 16mm original prints of everything he controlled including BLOOD ON THE SUN.

I am happy to say that I have BLOOD ON THE SUN from a print as good as what Republic Pictures Home Video released in the 1980's. I am quite confident it wasn't a public domain print. Ray, please correct me if I am wrong.

Nope, it wasn't PD. Republic licensed the Feiner library. They also released MY GIRL TISA, DISTANT DRUMS, JOHNNY COME LATELY, etc.

Thanks for your reply. Now if it were somehow possible to get a better sounding CD of Miklos Rozsa's score.

I agree Cody. Since the 70's Herrmann has been the Golden Age composer to cross-over to younger fans. But in the last 10 or 15 years Rozsa has crossed-over to younger fans too. There is hope!

Just to remember another big title involving the oriental ground of WW2, it is worth mentioning THREE CAME HOME by Friedhofer, which is in the Fox catalogue and can be "easily" released in its original tracks.

At least one Friedhofer title is coming from Intrada during the next few months. Could it be THREE CAME HOME or even WHITE FEATHER? Have the original elements been found?

Another possibility for a Friedhofer might be THE HARDER THEY FALL from 1956 and the Columbia vault.

I don't care what it is. Given this is Friedhofer this is probably either a premiere or a *significant* expansion/upgrade. Count me in. I would guess A Walk in the Forest, his final score, except that manderley already told us it was not Intrada who was working on the tapes he provided (and since they got the tapes for Die Sister Die from him, he would know).

Whatever this Friedhofer score is, I am implore everyone who loves great music to support it with a purchase. Show Intrada that Friedhofer will sell. It could be a test that will allow Intrada to decide whether to do a Kickstarter for JOAN OF ARC.

I agree Cody, I'd love to see this Friedhofer sell well, that would encourage more Friedhofer in the future.

At Intrada.com Roger confirmed that they have a Max Steiner CD planned and it is waiting for approval. smile

Besides, A WALK IN THE FOREST is a short documentary film with - according to the IMDB - a duration of only 28 minutes. So one of the problems with this score is certainly that for CD purposes it should be coupled with something else as it is very short.
