In the mid 1960s, I remember seeing in a local record shop here in Stoke-on-Trent a 45 rpm, 7 inch Extended Play record containing four tracks from the Brunswick soundtrack LP of the film "Spartacus" (LAT 8363). It had the same cover design as the LP, red background; the stars images inside gold pieces, the title in white lettering with a black shadow underneath, ect. In effect, a smaller, 7 inch version of the LP cover. I'd had the soundtrack LP since the early 1960s, but I didn't buy this EP at the time (maybe I was short of money) and incredibly, I've not seen it since. I've been on eBay now for seventeen years and it's never turned up on there, either, nor on Discogs or Music Stack or anywhere else. So this must be one hell of a rare EP. There are no Brunswick EP discographies on the Internet, so I can't find out any information on it. As the LP was released in 1960, the EP may date from around 1961. Does anyone here have any information on this EP, such as the catalogue number and titles of the tracks on it?

There were a great many 7" soundtrack EP records in the 1960s in the UK. In those days I couldn't afford a full price 12" LP record but I bought loads of EP records; LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, BEN-HUR, THE PRIZE for example, usually from HMV in Oxford Street. It seemed as if almost every major film had an EP record but many seemed to disappear - even from the second hand market. I don't recall SPARTACUS but I'm sure there must have been one for that film.

Hmmm, this is intriguing. The Gramophone Popular Record Catalogue from the time only lists the Brunswick LP, and unfortunately the trade Decca catalogue I have only goes up to the end of 1960. I did find this page, which seems to suggest that if there was an EP it would have been numbered OE 9481, 9483, 9484, 9485, 9486 and possibly 9487. Oddly, a quick google doesn't find references to any of those issues, so I wonder if one of them may be your elusive Spartacus, or possibly the numbers were just never assigned?

Well, I definitely saw it around 1966, so it must have existed and even if only a few copies were pressed (which seems unlikely), it seems very strange that none of them have ever turned up in Record Collector magazine (which I used to have every month at one time) or on eBay. I have a Decca EP from 1962 of soundtrack music from "The Lion" composed and conducted by Malcolm Arnold and that's very rare now, so the Brunswick "Spartacus" EP must be even rarer.

I also have "The Lion" Decca EP, which contains a good part of what was released on the Decca LP. Quite a few EPs were released in Europe in the 60s - The Longest Day (score tracks), Tunes of Glory & other UA scores, etc. - and interesting that your Spartacus EP hasn't popped up somewhere since you've been looking.

I have a number of soundtrack EP's from France that were probably never released in the UK, including “El Cid” and “Taras Bulba”. There may even have been a MGM British EP of Miklos Rozsa's score for “King of Kings”, but I've never seen it. However, like the MGM “Ben Hur” EP, the tracks on it would have been taken from the LP, which for some reason contained different recordings to those heard on the original film soundtracks.

Yes, there was a British MGM EP of Ben-Hur (EP 763). Along with the other UK EPs mentioned above there were also Warner EPs of Dead Ringer (Image) and Rome Adventure (Lovers Must Learn).

But back to Spartacus, I have found this Australian EP. I wonder if this was the same as the Brunswick one?

Thanks for finding that, roadshowfan. I hadn't found that myself on 45cat, probably because I was looking under Alex North instead of the Universal International Orchestra. It looks like the Australians used for the EP cover illustrated the back cover of the Brunswick LP, while the front cover of the LP was used for the Brunswick EP ('Spartacus' in white letters on a red background with the star's faces on gold coins, ect). I shall try to track down this Australian EP, although for sentimental reasons, I would prefer to find the Brunswick version.
