City Slickers is my favourite. But, as mentioned above, The Kid is also wonderful. Back when the movie came out I was desperately looking for a soundtrack CD - until I learned it was not released at all. I hope one of our labels will do something about it.
If that's a real question, the answer is No. To call A Few Good Men "syrupy" is completely inaccurate. The Diary of Anne Frank is syrupy (I like it anyway) but AFGM isn't close to syrupy. It does feature some synth parts, incidentally, though probably not enough for you. (I know you don't like anything that doesn't come out of a keyboard, like real musical instruments played by actual highly trained and skillful human musicians.)
A Few Good Men is probably my favorite Marc Shaiman score (since that's what the thread is about), though I usually like his scores and wouldn't argue with anyone's choices.
