Fantastic release, worthy of the fanfare it presents.

If anyone does not have this, I strongly advise the purchase.

Williams wrote an eight- and five-note motif for Krypton (the latter represented mystery, suspense, danger and was also used as a motif for kryptonite). I wonder if this five-note motif was one of the hundreds of such motifs he composed and didn't use for CLOSE ENCOUNTERS?

7 note theme.

No, his mystery/danger motif for Krypton is 5 notes.

Is there any good reason to get this set if you already own the FSM blue box? Its always sounded great to my ears.

Well, it's from first rather than second generation masters and includes the never before heard alternate of The Fortress of Solitude. But how much of an improvement is enough of an improvement is really a personal choice.

Does Archer have that much music? I like the spy knockoff theme, but I don't hear very much music in the show.

You have the show??

There’s just shy of 20 minutes of music from Archer, and the theme gets a good workout.

The Baton: A John Williams Musical Journey

Episode 50 - Superman
November 20, 2019

https://thebatonpodcast.podbean.com/e/episode-50-superman/
The 50th episode of The Baton is here! And what better way to mark the occasion than a discussion of one of the most popular film scores in history. Possibly the only part of making Superman that went without a major hitch was the composition and recording of the iconic score. This was just 18 months after John Williams' score for Star Wars showed his mastery of creating music for characters that found its way into the mainstream. Host Jeff Commings is joined by Doug Grieve, a trombone player who talks about the composition of the music for the opening titles and the introduction to the planet Krypton. In this opening six minutes of the film, Williams creates music that excites, mystifies and exalts, all with the use of carefully selected musical intervals. Learn more about this super score on this episode of The Baton.

I'll never forgive the Greater Soundtrack Community for getting their hands on the Superman remaster before I did.

Tough year. At least I get to do Monsignor at the same time.

All jazzed for this.

Anyone still listening a year later? Wanna tell me how much improvement has been accomplished?

Can't find this on the La-La Land website. I thought it was temporarily out of stock. Sold out?

I just bought one (Superman) last night. I hope I didn't get the last one!

Here's the cached page from Google for Superman:

https://tinyurl.com/y53qalwf

It's from two days ago (3rd September), and so the CD was still available from La La Land then. Besides, if this release had sold out in the last two days, wouldn't it show up as 'out of print'? It may be a glitch in La La Land's site which is resulting in the page not appearing.

In any case, my view is that anyone who owns the FSM Superman boxed set doesn't need this La La Land re-release. I am aware that people claim the sound on the FSM release is inferior to the La La Land release, but to my ears, the Krypton cues and the helicopter rescue cue, for example, sound glorious on the FSM release. There's also the fact that the FSM set comes with that gorgeous hardback book of liner notes. Personally, I see no reason to 'upgrade' to the La La Land release.

Saberman: Personally, I see no reason to 'upgrade' to the La La Land release.

I don't think anyone who was a big fan of this score could seriously claim that if they'd actually listened to the La-La Land edition.

It's the difference between a transfer from the original studio tapes versus hard drive transfers from secondary sources.

Whatever the cause of this strange occurrence, it has persuaded me to finally pull the trigger on purchasing this edition of Superman and have ordered a copy from Screen Archives.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about. The following quote is from the description of the FSM boxed set:

Williams's music to Superman: The Movie has been released on several occasions, most recently on a 2CD set from Rhino (now out of print). That album, however, was reconstructed using secondary dubbing elements, as the six-track 35mm music masters were unearthed only afterwards. For this definitive presentation, the entire recording has been painstakingly remixed and remastered from that first-generation source, yielding the best sound quality ever.

So the score in the FSM set is from a first-generation source. As I said, it sounds great to my ears. I'm not buying this score on CD for a fourth time for perhaps a marginal improvement in sound quality. I'd rather spend my money on a score I don't already own. But if other people are happy to spend their money for the umpteenth time on this score then good for them. It's their money.

The 40th anniversary set not only has the best sound quality that will ever be possible, exceeding that of the FSM box set, but it also includes Williams' alternate Fortress of Solitude music, never heard before this new set, which is amazing.
