Well, it's from first rather than second generation masters and includes the never before heard alternate of The Fortress of Solitude. But how much of an improvement is enough of an improvement is really a personal choice.

It's from two days ago (3rd September), and so the CD was still available from La La Land then. Besides, if this release had sold out in the last two days, wouldn't it show up as 'out of print'? It may be a glitch in La La Land's site which is resulting in the page not appearing.
In any case, my view is that anyone who owns the FSM Superman boxed set doesn't need this La La Land re-release. I am aware that people claim the sound on the FSM release is inferior to the La La Land release, but to my ears, the Krypton cues and the helicopter rescue cue, for example, sound glorious on the FSM release. There's also the fact that the FSM set comes with that gorgeous hardback book of liner notes. Personally, I see no reason to 'upgrade' to the La La Land release.

I don't think anyone who was a big fan of this score could seriously claim that if they'd actually listened to the La-La Land edition.
It's the difference between a transfer from the original studio tapes versus hard drive transfers from secondary sources.

Whatever the cause of this strange occurrence, it has persuaded me to finally pull the trigger on purchasing this edition of Superman and have ordered a copy from Screen Archives.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about. The following quote is from the description of the FSM boxed set:
Williams's music to Superman: The Movie has been released on several occasions, most recently on a 2CD set from Rhino (now out of print). That album, however, was reconstructed using secondary dubbing elements, as the six-track 35mm music masters were unearthed only afterwards. For this definitive presentation, the entire recording has been painstakingly remixed and remastered from that first-generation source, yielding the best sound quality ever.
So the score in the FSM set is from a first-generation source. As I said, it sounds great to my ears. I'm not buying this score on CD for a fourth time for perhaps a marginal improvement in sound quality. I'd rather spend my money on a score I don't already own. But if other people are happy to spend their money for the umpteenth time on this score then good for them. It's their money.
The 40th anniversary set not only has the best sound quality that will ever be possible, exceeding that of the FSM box set, but it also includes Williams' alternate Fortress of Solitude music, never heard before this new set, which is amazing.
