Who composed that creepy electronic-sounding music that plays when Sydow is standing in front of the house and when Burstyn opens the door?

That would be David Borden, an American composer of minimalist/electronic music. He was the founder and leader of Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpice Co., an early all-synthesizer (Moog) ensemble.

Here's an interview where he talks a little about his involvement in this movie:

Damn, they should've included his music in one of the soundtrack re-releases. None of it shows up in the post-1973 Mother Mallard albums?

Maybe this is a moog point, but just buy Wendy Carlos' "Clockwork Orange," has a similar bit at the start.

So there's been no release of the few pieces he composed for the film, or it can't be heard anywhere apart from the movie? I for one would like to hear what he composed.

I so appreciate this thread, as I've tried over the years to track down the original recordings of all the music used in the film, and have never been able to find anything on Borden's contributions (listed in the credits as "Study No.1 / Study No.2"). Aside from Borden's and Jack Nitzsche's work (outiside of "Iraq" from the soundtrack album) I've been able to track down the original recordings used for all the other music (never cared much for the re-recorded versions of Penderecki's or Henze's music on the soundtrack album).

However, I always thought that the music heard during Merrin's arrival to the house was another portion of Jack Nitzsche's "Crystal Glass and Voices"(?).

I would too. Can we all take up a letter writing campaign and see if he'll put them on his website or something? He's still alive last I checked. Here's the website of Mother Mallard, the synthesizer band he was in: http://mothermallard.com/Mother_Mallard.html

I also covered how he got on and what he did, talking to him via e-mail, for my Rejected Film Scores website:

http://rejectedfilmscores.125mb.com/list.html

Under DEMOS. Coincidentally, the second entry under DEMOS.

The link to the article on Borden just shows up as the main list page.
