I think the story of the ‘stereo’ “The Gasser” mix came up on Yavar’s excellent Goldsmith Odyssey podcast.
There were two different mono fold-down mixes for a section of it. One emphasised the percussion a bit more. Lining them up, and correcting for speed variations and other wonkiness, allowed a rudimentary stereo mix to be made from these two mono ‘angles’.
Thanks for that, Chris (plus David and Yavar) - Apart from "The Gasser" info, I was really interested to hear (on the Odyssey, starting at about 1hr 25m) the work that went into ARCHER. All that cutting and splicing from different takes. An incredible amount of work which I never really thought about before. I had actually heard that Odyssey - all three and a half hours of it - last summer, but because I didn't have the CD at that time I probably paid insufficient attention to the details. My appreciation of this great little gem has gone up further still.
Any more comments on the music on this release? I think so far it's just zooba n' me.
Anyone else find the mastering on these scores to be a bit 'Labson-Hot'? They practically burst from the speakers to attack me!! I'm a bit scared to listen to it on headphones.

You guys! I just love Warning Shot. I grew up wishing I had something other than the Si Zenter, which I liked, but it wasn't, you know, Goldsmith. A great noirish theme.
