I think it's 99% likely that JNH will return for this. His score for the first film was one of the few really good highlights in the composer's last decade and a half.

The Village, King Kong, Lady in the Water, I Am Legend, Charlie Wilson's War, The Happening, Defiance, The Last Airbender, Fantastic Beasts, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms say hi.

He’s had far more misses in the past 15 years than hits, though. He was a sure thing before that.

who is the audience looking for this sequel?

Watched the trailer and got nothing out of it. Just "Meh".

It is just slogged with visual effects, this looks like stuff that was trying to ride the coat tails of Lord of the Rings and Narnia 15 years ago

Dang, that's too bad. I really enjoyed JNH's score for the first one, especially the track 'Maleficent Flies.' Was really looking forward to his returning to this soundscape. I've enjoyed his scores for the Fantastic Beast series. While I know Geoff Zanelli's name, I can't recall anything at the moment from his repertoire that ever struck me as being particularly good or memorable.

Try Into the West. I love that score.

He also did the "Finale" cue in Zimmer's Lone Ranger score, incorporating the William Tell Overture and Zimmer's themes. Cracker of a cue.

Some nice cues in his recent Pirates of the Caribbean score, too.

After a first listen on Spotify I’m pleasantly surprised and will be getting the cd.

I’d also preferred Newton-Howard was hired and could expand upon his first score. But the score is very good keeping a strong continuity by using the themes from the first. I need to listen more to see if there is appealing new material, what catched my attention on first listen we’re the variations on the first movie’s themes.

But it is great to have a franchise score that kept the themes and sound of the previous score in this age of new composers providing ‘all new’ music in sequels with only small cameos of themes from the previous scores (Terminator, Rambo, Marvel movies, etc)

Very curious about this. The first score is one of the very few JNHs I've enjoyed post-THE VILLAGE.

Shame JNH didnt do the sequel. It would surely be the only good thing about it. Not familiar with this other composer. Will check it out on Spotify.

I don't think it is coming out on cd. Only the digital album is for sale, although Disney will probably release it on vinyl at some point.

I've had a listen-through now. Terribly disappointing, a far cry from the first score (which also had its warts, mind you). Very generic for the most part, when he isn't referencing JNH's material.

First listen and I kinda agree with both Dambeck and Thor on different aspects of the score.

Great to see them use the themes from the first film. The sequel score sounds like it belongs in the same musical universe as the first. Previous themes are well represented. I hate it when composers represent pre-existing themes only as motifs.

A lot of the new material in the first two thirds is kinda moody underscore. Its orchestral and well written but a little of it goes a long way. I do hear a couple of new themes.

The action music is extremely generic. Which is typical of almost every score nowadays. Perhaps a whittled down version will make for a pleasant listen.

I wouldn’t say its a terrible score by any means, nor terribly disappointing. But without some engaging action music to go with the more lyrical cues the overall presentation is lacking.
