Ref: MBR-151
Release Date: April 3, 2019

In collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, Music Box Records presents the first ever complete release of Nino Rota's score for Fellini's hidden gem - I clowns.

In 1970, Federico Fellini directed one of his most unusual projects - a television movie paying tribute to his obsession with circus performers. His I clowns is part earnest tribute, part mockumentary, part historical footage and part myth building in a crazy, colorful Kaleidoscope of circus madness. I clowns originally premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it was voted the Best Italian film in August 1970, its actual television and theatrical premiere was on Christmas 1970.

Nino Rota's music builds upon his shared interest in circus with Fellini, building upon circus classics as well as his previous scores like The White Sheik, 8½ and Juliet of the Spirits. His music is largely orchestrated the brassy world of circus bands, but there are touching, lyrical moments as well for the life stories of the clowns, not to mention the great nostalgic moments that underscore Fellini's early memories of his first circus visit.

The original LP release for I clowns featured dialogue and sound effects in addition to the music organized into two suites. This release by Music Box Records features the complete, chronological underscore on Disc 1 (without dialogue and sound effects), and a recreation of the LP program on Disc 2. Supervised by Claudio Fuiano, this current 2 CD edition has been carefully restored and remastered by Christophe Hénault from the recording session tapes. The booklet by Gergely Hubai discusses the unusual film and score, including its varied influences and chequered release history. This release is limited to 500 units.

Wow this would be an utterly fantastic release for me....without disc 2.

But of course given it's Rota + 500 copies it'll likely sell out reletively quick so they don't need my patronage anyway.....

Incredible release. Samples sound very crisp. Well, disc 2 is a free bonus regarding the total price for this title, so no complaints here :-) The set runs almost for one hundred minutes... And like you said, what? 500 copies only? Ordered!

Sales might stall at 499, and they'll really need your patronage to sell it out. They could probably remove the 2nd disc, too.

This appears to be on the number one spot of orders at SAE. Mine will arrive soon from Music Box, even though his music for Fellini films are not my favorite Rota scores (but still very good of course), I'm looking very much forward to listen to this expanded score.

On a side note, there is a new CD out with Nino Rota's 'classical' compositions on Warner Classics 'Works for harp' by Anneleen Lennaerts on harp. It contains his Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, Sonata for Flute and Harp (this is a wonderful piece that I already have by the Ex Novo Ensemble, will be nice to compare the recordings), Sarabande e Toccata and newly arranged themes from his film scores for The Godfather, Death on the Nile, La Dolce Vita, Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew. Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Adrien Perruchon. On the 10th of April it will be 40 years since Rota's death, but his music lives on.

I'm also very happy with this expanded reissue since I never bought the CAM LP/CD because of the dialogue. This score certainly provides a lot of fun throughout. Apart from the aboundant circus music including the exhilarating main theme, there are also a couple of more mysterious tracks using a sound I didn't identify for sure: Ondes Martenot? Or possibly just a musical saw? As a whole, a very welcome album, thanks MBR.

The news of this excellent release passed me by. Bravo Quartet for continuing to expand Nino Rota scores. I always found the original release of "The Clowns" to be severely underwhelming - consisting of two long tracks filled with sound effects and dialogue, the original release is more of an audio version of the film than a normal soundtrack. But now, finally, we have the perfect release of this score.

Another Fellini film that had a soundtrack release filled with dialogue and long tracks is "Intervista," composed by Nicolai Piovani but incorporating some Rota themes from past Fellini films. Though there isn't as much dialogue here as the original release of "I Clowns," there's still too much & a lot of cues are abbreviated and/or edited into long tracks. Hopefully at some point that title will also be revisited with a superior presentation.

Again, kudos for tackling "I Clowns," another extremely wonderful release for Rota and Fellini fans.

I have listened to this set a couple of times now. Gives you that crazy 'life is a circus' feeling. Nino Rota could excel in this kind of music like no other. Brings a couple of smiles too listening to all this musical chaos and quotes. Great stuff! Thanks a lot Music Box!

Thanks for your side note - I looked on Amazon (though I would order from Arkiv if they carry it - haven't checked yet). Surprised not to be able to find it...
