A true classic ! Mishandled by United Artists when first released to theaters. Sold in a package of motion pictures to television a few years later. Suddenly the critics and the public saw what a gem of a film it was. So many people make this film so memorable... Charles Laughton,David Grubb,James Agee, Stanley Cortez and Walter Schumann. The cast headed by Robert Mitchum, Lillian Gish , Shelley Winters, James Gleason and Evelyn Varden and others were true perfection. Once again , I have mentioned it often enough, I dream of a new recording of Walter Schumann's score at times dark and brooding and at other times like music for a fairy tale. In case you may not know of it, Preston Neal Jones has written a wonderful book about all aspects of the creation of this memorable film. It is titled HEAVEN AND HELL TO PLAY WITH: THE FILMING OF THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER.

Ooops ! The name of the author of the book, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER is Davis Grubb; not David Grubb.

Thanks for the kind plug, Cody, and for sharing my love for this film (and score). I just a moment ago wrote to a friend at TCM and expressed the wish that I'd known ahead of time they'd be celebrating the 100th year anniversary of United Artists. As I relate in my book, producer Paul Gregory was so upset with the tight budget, the rush to production and the shabby distribution that he told the execs, "You're not United Artists, you're united against the artists!"
