Cool, I'll change his status too.

I've stumbled on a new name for your list, Thor.

American Doug Goodwin, composer of a huge amount of cartoon music, is 93.

And here's a second new name for your list: US musical composer Sheldon Harnick, who is 98.

Thanks, but did he write actual instrumental scores? He seems to be a lyricist and songwriter, first and foremost.

He's got two composer credits on imdb. But nothing significant. Fair enough!

Doug Goodwin was a proper composer though.

And of course, Quincy Jones just turned 90.

True. Added.

He did. He's obviously been on the list since day 1.

For some reason, nobody commented on the fact that David Shire was not on the list. Added now. He's 85, and the reason I noticed is that I just saw a pic of him on Facebook, attending some event in The United Arab Emirates alongside Robert Townson, John Debney and Tan Dun, I think. I've been to the UAE, and it was not a pleasant experience, but be that as it may, hope he had a good time. He looks a bit frail, and was wheelchair-bound, but I hope he's in decent condition otherwise.

David is very well indeed and sharp as a tack.

You can listen to the aforementioned symphony here. David contributed the movement entitled PEACE:

Well we have to ask now!

David Shire is starting to look more like John Barry.

And Stu Phillips is 93.

Yeah, he's been on the list since the beginning.

Mostly a Broadway composer

How about John Kander? He's 96. Primarily known for writing the scores for stage musicals Chicago and Cabaret (which were then used in the films), he was also a film score composer.

Double checking the list again, and there have unfortunately been some passings since the last time (and hence removed from the list):

William James Edwards Lee III (aka "Bill" Lee, Spike's father) passed away this year, on May 24, aged 94.
Joseph Koo passed away January 3, aged 91.
Nico Fidenco passed away on my birthday last year, November 19, 2022, aged 89.
Carl Davis passed away August 3, as you all know, aged 86.
Jules Bass passed away last year, October 25, aged 87.

For some reason, someone suggested Con Conrad, but he passed away in 1938, so I don't know what he was doing there. Removed.

Most of my favorite film composers emerged in the 1960s, and most are gone, but thankfully not Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin.

And isn't it ironic that the two who probably spent the most time in smoky jazz clubs and all-night jam sessions are the two that are still with us.

God love them and their music.

So I've finally updated this (sorta morbid) thread.

Since the last time, these have passed away and hence removed from the list:

Gennady Gladkov
Peter Schickele
Gianfranco Reverberi
Romuald Twordowkski
Laurie Johnson
David Lee

On a more positive note, 1939 is now eligible, so I've added Patrick Williams and Wendy Carlos. Feel free to add more for this year and others, if you know any.

Thor, Patrick Williams passed away in 2018.

However, David Lee is still breathing in and out. Not an uncommon name, so it's easy to get confused. Born in August 1926, he's now 97.
