Kritzerland is proud to present the latest release in the Ben Bagley series:

BALLET ON BROADWAY … AND MORE

Music by Jule Styne, Harold Arlen, Harry Warren, Cole Porter, Sigmund Romberg, Gene de Paul, Hoagy Carmichael, Vernon Duke

Lyrics by Ted Fetter, Lawrence and Lee, Harold Rome

Ballet Arrangements by Genevieve Pitot, Peter Matz, Trude Rittman
Ballet on Broadway conducted by Lehman Engel

Ballet on Broadway was rescued from oblivion by Ben Bagley. It was a pet project of the great Lehman Engel. Only a handful of copies got pressed, it was not released, and no one ever knew of its existence, other than Engel and the lucky few who managed to have a copy. Bagley contacted Engel, who was thrilled it could finally see the light of the day, and finally musical theatre lovers got to hear it.

Creating dance and ballet musical arrangements in musicals was and is a true art and this CD is the living proof. Great dance and ballet music from High Button Shoes, Jamaica, Look Ma, I’m Dancin’, Shangri-La, Can-Can, The Girl in Pink Tights, and the amazing “Sadie Hawkins Day Ballet” from Li’l Abner. These kinds of things never made the cast albums of the shows, so it’s simply wonderful to have them available and brilliantly conducted by Engel.

Ballet on Broadway was originally released by Bagley on LP. He later released it on CD but it’s been out of print for decades. As he was wont to do, Bagley filled out the running time of the CD was some wonderful and obscure material, mostly by the great Vernon Duke. The Show is On was a 1937 musical revue with music mostly by Duke and lyrics by Ted Fetter. Dilly was adapted by playwrights Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee from the novel, Miss Dilly Says No. They worked on it in the early 1950s but the musical never happened. The songs, however, are delightful. In 1943, Duke, with Harold Rome as his lyricist, wrote a musical called Nantucket, set in the 19th century. They wrote nine songs for it, but it, like Dilly, never got off the ground. One can never have enough Vernon Duke and these selections are all very interesting and filled with Duke’s wonderful melodies.

As with our other releases in our ongoing reissues of the Ben Bagley albums, we have spruced up the sound considerably and we, of course, feature the wonderful art of Harvey Schmidt.

BALLET ON BROADWAY … AND MORE is limited to 500 copies only and priced at $19.98, plus shipping. This is a PRE-ORDER – CDs will ship by the last week of May, but never fear, we’ve actually been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com. Also note that your PayPal receipt is the only receipt you get – we don’t send out confirmations beyond that.

Maybe more film music fans here will find this Broadway album appealing, since it's more purely orchestral in focus than others in the series. Neat release!

I don't always list the new show stuff here, but a few people asked me to, since they collect both, so why not?

Still hoping that sometime in the next few months you will surprise us with that long awaited multi- disc Fox boxset. I know many of us like Yavar, PFK and Niall are looking forward to it as much as myself. Thank you, Bruce.

I hope the Ben Bagley series is selling well for you Bruce as I think you indicated it is. I bought some of this series on LP's in the late 1960's. Fine music to be sure.

I hope this year you will be able to release your Fox Box if possible and a few other Golden Age and quality Silver Age CD's.

Please keep in mind many Golden Age fans are now in their 60's and 70's and retired on a limited income. I know I am.
From 1964 to about 2004, 40 years, I bought a LOT of LP's and then CD's. For the past 15 years I've had to be very selective and have passed on CD's I would like to have. Still, I have a lot of Kritzerland CD's and hopefully more to come.

Thanks Bruce for all of your hard work and the great CD's you have given us ..... and yet to come! smile

Surely PFK the Fox box won't be something you will have to think twice about if you are a true champion of Kritzerland and scores from the golden age.smile

Surely not; it sounds like it will have a variety of great composers. Sadly after Nick Redman's tragic and untimely death, combined with the Disney purchase of Fox, I very much fear that Bruce might break the news that the project is no longer happening. If that happens (please reassure us one more time, Bruce?) then we might just have to hope that Intrada considers picking up what Bruce has been working on, as they did with George Duning's Then Came Bronson and some other projects that originated first with FSM.

Does this CD include the liner notes from the LP? Talk about a time capsule! For example...

The music represented on this album was composed for the few entertaining ballets that did indeed help to further plots along, but were terrifc in their own right and could have held their own in any revue or impudent musical comedy produced before the advent of "Oklahoma" and Agnes de Mille. The Agnes de Mille ballet, which usually represented souls in search of something or other, almost killed the American Musical Theatre.

Let's get back to glamour, with the exception of Vera Zorina and Zizi Jeanmaire, most ballet girls have bodies like Audrey Hepburn and faces like Victor Mature, and the ballet boys can't be properly described on the sleeve of a record which will go into homes where there are small children and cats.

Oh my....

You're forgetting something, Yavar. Bruce has already told us that Mike Matessimo has been working on it for quite awhile. That says to me that the project was already approved before the Disney purchase and before Nick Redman's untimely passing. Also, the blu-rays of 20 CF movies are still being issued by SAE. Weren't Chris Spaulding and Nick Redman partners in that venture. Maybe you are expecting bad news from Bruce; I am not. I hope you are not trying to give Bruce a way out.

Ah Cody, you know the Fox box would be an instant buy for me! smile

Actually, I have all the Golden Age up to 1965 or so, after that I have to be more selective.

I'm sure if it's at all possible Bruce will complete and issue the Fox box. Fingers crossed!

1. Why on earth *would* I “be trying to give Bruce a way out” when you know I want this box set too? Golden Age premieres including Alfred Newman?? Sign me up.

2. Why on earth would you think Bruce needs me to give him a way out? That’s just silly. After working on it (and having Mike work on it), I have no doubt that IF Bruce can put out the box, he will! He wouldn’t have told us about it months ago if he wasn’t sure it’d be coming out eventually at the time. But he didn’t know that Nick Redman was going to pass away when he did, and Nick was the Fox person who this all went through.

Yes , I know that you want that Fox box as much as myself. Yesterday you sounded less optimistic than you are today; even bringing Intrada into the picture which really isn't necessary. Nick Redman has passed on but SAE is still releasing 20CF films under their Twilight Time brand. Stay optimistic as you are today.

Can't find the thread for the new Three Plays disc (Bernstein, North, Rosenthal), so I'll confirm the arrival of my CD here. Listening now... excellent as expected.

You know, I don't understand why that thread is so hard to find either. I eventually found it somehow but it's weird to me. Let me see if I can bump it so you can post this there.
