I'm sure there are other examples, but for me this current conundrum is falling to the Quartet Records release of Total Recall.

Brilliant, landmark, trailblazing score...but I love the Varese! Wondering if I'm really missing out.

I'm so glad to put a topic up, I have been really energized since steadily retrieving my collection back.

I hope everyone is having an amazing, film-music filled Springtime!

Quartet sounds way better, has film versions of cues, totally complete and includes early sessions.
I’ve never gone back to the Varese one after quartet.

Seconded. I enjoyed the Varese expansion for many years, but the Quartet is a definitive leap forward ... a significant improvement across the board. VERY much worth owning, especially if this is a score you love.

The Quartet release is mandatory for the "Secret Agent" and original, film version "The Mutant" cues alone, and I'm not even mentioning "Clever Girl" and "The Space Station".

Just get it, dammit.

Consider this a fourth recommendation for the Quartet edition--for all the reasons stated already. I owned the Varese DE and ditched it as soon as I heard this one.

I own both versions. All the commenters above are right. Just get it before it goes OOP.

Perhaps this interview with Neil S Bulk should clear your mind:

I gave my Varese CD away after buying the Quartet.

Sixthed (seventhed?) Its the only complete release of Total Recall out there and it does include the original Varese assembly in better sound if you want it.

Really appreciate this conversation, all. I was very pleased with the VS version, so when Quartet came out with theirs, I must have just glossed over it...not this time. I finally took a good look at the release based on this thread and ordered it immediately.

So many great contributors here...thanks for keeping all the info and opinions coming.

If nothing else, the Quartet edition spells hologram correctly.

No disrespect to the Varese album, which for 15 years was the definitive edition, but if you love this score you've got to get the Quartet.

Man, you guys sold me. I've had the Varese for years and was happy with it but after reading these comments I immediately went and bought the Quartet!

I remember when the Quartet version came out, I was a little shocked because I thought the Varese version was unusually long for a Jerry score. TBH, when I first bought this score, I didn't get all the hype. I thought it was too busy like maybe JG had one too many cups of coffee when he was writing.

Over the years though, I've delved a little deeper into the score and have grown to really enjoy it. It's not a relaxing or meditative listen at all--it pretty much hits you over the head with a hammer. But it's fun and the performance--HOLY SHIT--the NPO would never again reach this level of organized chaos under Jerry's baton.

So, like some of you, I've been eyeing the Quartet release with renewed interest.

On a similar note, what about Basic Instinct? I have the Prometheus and I listen to it quit often--is the Quartet worth the upgrade...? (sorry, not trying to hijack the thread smile )
