Riffs, borrowings, temp tracking doesn't really bother me at all. Not from McNeely, not from Horner, not from Williams. Nada, zilch, zero. Great music is great music even if its a new take on something familiar. Riffing on an existing piece by another of totally fine - IF it's credited. If it's not, that's just plagiarism. I still like elements of Iron Will, but this score was most famous in 1994 FOR the temp trackitis. The original 1994 FSM review (by "Roy Fokker") is here on pg. 33: https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/backissues/viewissue.cfm?issueID=151 What a treasure, this print archive. I find that totally impractical...and not even sure how you'd implement that. If you quote a score, then it makes sense. But because it sounds like one? What would that look like? Darth Vader's Theme* *Sounds strikingly similar to Holst's "Mars Bringer of War" from The Planets. Star Wars Main Theme** **May or may not contain a quote from Erich Wolfgang Korngold's KING'S ROW.

I find that totally impractical...and not even sure how you'd implement that. If you quote a score, then it makes sense. That's exactly what I'm saying, Roger. Other than the obvious legal headaches and licensing fees involved with such an idea, it would be less unseemly to just credit scores if you're deliberately quoting or having to quote from them (even if you're Vanilla Ice-ing the notes a hair). I still listen to the Varese album from time to time - the score is professionally orchestrated, performed and recorded - but you can't just gloss over how most of us reacted to hearing it back in the era. Some of the Iron Will references are pretty blatant, but 25 years changes a lot of people's minds about plagiarism, I guess! McNeely balanced this temp directive much better with Terminal Velocity. The Vertigo references make total sense in the context of the film, and that was probably McNeely's decision more than it was a temp track.

Wow, this is a tremendous release! Much improved sound and many previously unreleased highlights. Highly recommended.

Revisited this today... glorious release. And I was really struck by how the little rising motif turns into a beautiful hymn (heard best in "Harper Converts") that was entirely absent from the previous release. Favorite previously unreleased tracks: "Hero Montage," "Phone Report," "Harper Converts"
