I pulled out my print of MORNING GLORY last night and ran it for some folks. I was reminded of a wonderful scene with effective scoring by Max Steiner. At a party, an intoxicated Katharine Hepburn chastises the cynical theater crowd and gives her interpretation of Hamlet. As gets further into "to be or not to be", the lighting turns more subdued and Steiner's music grows gradually darker. A remarkable combination of subtlety on the part of technicians and performer. Directed by Lowell Sherman.

This post reminds me of a scene in STAGE STRUCK as Susan Strasberg recites the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. Alex North's subtle underscore enhances the moment.

A question for you Ray:

Do you know who composed the overture that plays before the final stage performance in STAGE DOOR?

Thanks!

Yes - that is Roy Webb's main title to THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII (RKO 1935).

And, of course, STAGE STRUCK was a remake of MORNING GLORY.

Here is POMPEII:

Thanks Ray for finding this great sound clip!

I've wondered for decades about the STAGE DOOR piece.

It is interesting how well Webb's music composed for an historical epic also serves as a stage overture for a contemporary theater drama.

I'm a re-minted Steiner fan, thanks to RF's CAGED set.

So, now I'm going to watch this film, based on RF's praise of it!

It's out of print frown, but there is a nice suite from MORNING GLORY on our 3CD MAX STEINER: THE RKO YEARS set.

This stands not in the way of Library Nerds, who find many things long out of print! smile
