A promising project for Mr Newman who reunites with Sam Mendes for the sixth time.

Currently in production.

According to rumour it's a one-shot movie like RUSSIAN ARK, so presumably it will be all shot on one day.

Hopefully Newman takes longer with the score.

The "music", sound design, and annoying cuts, just make this trailer a pain to sit through; awful presentation. And it took 55 SECONDS for the trailer to actually start telling us what this even about!!!

Anyway, I'm in the middle after seeing the trailer; nothing leaps out as bad, but nothing suggests good either. I'll wait for a better trailer.

I wish Williams was scoring this though.

And, because I instantly heard it in my head...

CinemaSins voice: "Looks like he went to the Prometheus School of Running Away from Things."

Looks like a fairly boilerplate war movie. But, hey... Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Sam Mendes, and Thomas Newman's music into the bargain. What's not to like?!

Gallipoli blues on the Western front but with the austerity minimalism of Dunkirk?

The film looks intriguing, but I doubt there's much of a 'canvas' there for Newman to go all old-school, if that's what people are hoping for. I'm guessing it will be far more claustrophobic and textural.

Early reactions seem to suggest Newman indeed went all old-school.

This may prove to be more interesting than the film itself.

Give Newman his Oscar.

Don't pull a Morricone on him.

Thomas Newman needs to compose his best score ever to have any chance to beat John Williams' last (remix) score

First reactions via Twitter. Lots of people are talking about Newman score, and some say it's a masterpiece (toghether with the cinematography by Deakins).

"1917 is THE technical achievement of 2019. We’re with these men through every footstep & it’s unlike any war film you’ve ever seen before. Epic & tense direction by Sam Mendes, emotional & exhilarating music from Thomas Newman & an all timer from cinematographer Roger Deakins."

"'1917' is the best war film since SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. The cinematography of the year. The cinematography of the decade. Thomas Newman's orchestral masterpiece. Sam Mendes gift to cinema...and his family. Every ounce is powerful."

"1917 is stunning! The camera never leaves the characters making for a visceral experience. The performances by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman are excellent and the score is one of Thomas Newman's best. See it in the biggest, loudest theater you can."

"1917: I feel like I’ve just been pummeled in the chest for two hours. The crafts are out of this world, performances are strong, and Mendes’s direction maybe the best it’s ever been. Thomas Newman’s score + Roger Deakins’s cinematography = an experience you’ll never forget."

"Sam Mendes delivers an emotional and powerful film with #1917. A combo of Saving Private Ryan and The Revenant if u may, bold storytelling and an amazing performance by George MacKay. Great cinematography by Roger Deakins and excellent score by Thomas Newman. Simply phenomenal."

Indeed! I'll have to eat my words, then. Looking forward to this film (and score) even more now, but I'll have to wait a couple of months; the movie doesn't premiere here untill January 24th.

About time Newman won an Oscar and in a mediocre year his chances must be particularly good.

Between this and Rise of Skywalker, going to be a good day.

Full review here from Indiewire - https://www.indiewire.com/2019/11/1917-review-sam-mendes-single-take-wwi-1202192008/ - with a few appreciative nods to Newman's score that give us some suggestions of at least the approach taken:

"... a never sentimental and wholly original entry into the pantheon of war movie scores ..."

"... but Mendes has also keenly imagined it as something of a horror film, complete with an often unbearably tense score ..."

So, not so much old fashioned Newman but something a bit different that transcends?

This whole thing was not at all on my radar even a week ago but color me psyched.
