...it starts off with a pop song, then a suite of themes from the film put together by the music editor, & then that peters out & the last three minutes all those thousands of names roll up in silence.

Regardless of the length of the credits, very few films end their credit rolls in silence. There is almost invariably music of some sort to the very end. The music. however, rarely ends in a crescendo or final statement, but usually with some soft chord progressions. If there is a "final" flourish, it usually comes at the end of the major, individual credits, before the roll of the minor credits begins.

My wife, daughter and I stay, often the only ones left besides the cleaning crew. We usually hang at the back near the doorway.

Even in my early teens, I’d stay while my parents made their way to the facilities and the car. It worked out well in the winter; the car would just be getting toasty by the time I got there!

You're lucky they hung around for you. I'd have been off, mate!

I usually stay to listen to the music. I like to think this is the opportunity for the composer to strut his/her stuff. On the other hand, I often wonder if this is just left to the music editor.

Plus, watching the credits is a way to avoid the audience stampede on the way out.

Back when I went to theaters to see movies with any regularity, I stayed to hear the end credits score. But with the score in the fifteen years, I can't say that would ever happen again. But seeing as I probably see one or two movies a year (no movies in probably two or three years), I am spared this.

But there have been times I had to bail. Like the Godawful songs for "Matrix: Revolutions". Makes Chinese water torture seem like a pleasant massage.

I'm sure the temptation crossed their minds!

I stay for the music, but also for the post-credit sequences, which I first noticed at a press screening of THE MISSION. After that, I stayed out of added curiosity. LITTLE BUDDAH had a powerful moment after the credits. PRICILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT had a hilarious moment. L.A.CONFIDENTIAL had a mini-movie. YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES had an extended filmed credit sequence, with a twisty surprise ending.

Sadly, when these films are shown on cable, they rush the end credits, and cut them iff before any added sequence can be seen.

As for people getting up to leave early, I first remember seeing that at the roadshow showing of CLEOPATRA that I saw at the Rivoli Theater in New York in 1963.
