THURSDAY, MAY 9 IT CHAPTER 2---trailer released for the sequel. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqUopiAYdRg GAME OF THRONES---photos from Episode 5 hint at the upcoming Battle of King's Landing. AVENGERS: ENDGAME---James Cameron posted his congratulations after ENDGAME surpassed Cameron's TITANIC as the second highest-grossing movie ever with an image showing the Titanic hitting an ENDGAME iceberg. IMMORTAL---new movie described as, “In the story, hot-shot Detective Byrnes and rookie cop James McCafferty, whose morals are conflicting, work together on the hunt for London’s serial killer Jack the Ripper who, some believe, sailed to New York after his London killings suddenly ceased in 1888.” Roger Donaldson (SPECIES) is the director. Pete Dowling (FLIGHTPLAN) is the writer. FATMAN---Mel Gibson stars in this Christmas comedy movie about a Santa who has a hit put out on him by a disgruntled boy after he gets a lump of coal for Christmas. FAST & FURIOUS---Universal Pictures is considering a spinoff movie focused on Cipher (Charlize Theron). THE WITCHES---Stanley Tucci and Chris Rock will co-star with Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer in the Robert Zemeckis movie based on the Roald Dahl novel. THE LONG NIGHT---Bruce Willis stars in this movie about a doctor who must protect his family after robbers break into his house and demand medical treatment for a wounded robber. AWAY---Hillary Swank stars in this Netflix movie about an astronaut who must leave her family behind for a mission to Mars. STUMPTOWN---Cobie Smulders will star in this untitled ABC tv series based on the STUMPTOWN graphic novel. BILLIONS---Showtime renewed the series for Season 5. TRIVIA---the 1963 John Huston murder mystery movie THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER starred George C. Scott and Dana Wynter. The movie emphasized cameo appearances by Kirk Douglas, Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum and Burt Lancaster. However, Jan Merlin, who secretly played some of the characters played by Douglas, claimed that Sinatra, Curtis and Lancaster never appeared in the body of the movie and only appeared after the movie ended and are shown removing their disguises. Other sources say Sinatra and Lancaster never appeared in the body of the movie. Kirk Douglas added that Elizabeth Taylor was supposed to have a cameo as a man, "Elizabeth Taylor agreed to play a sailor called 'Chesty.' I thought it would be fantastic to have this grizzled sailor peel off his mask, and see the beautiful face of Liz Taylor underneath. I made all the arrangements to send the makeup man from Universal to Switzerland, where she was at the time, to make a mask of her face. And then something happened and she dropped out." Supposedly, Taylor turned down the cameo because the makeup process was very grueling. THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER heavily promoted mystery cameos by Kirk Douglas, Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster and Robert Mitchum. Jan Merlin played some of the characters supposedly played by Kirk Douglas. Tony Curtis may or may not have appeared in the movie's main body. Frank Sinatra did not really play the gypsy horseman and only appeared in the epilogue removing his disguise. Burt Lancaster did not really play the female protester and only appeared in the epilogue removing his disguise.

FATMAN---Mel Gibson stars in this Christmas comedy movie about a Santa who has a hit put out on him by a disgruntled boy after he gets a lump of coal for Christmas. I like that idea! Now if only it doesn't get saddled with a crappy director, crappy writer, and crappy composer...

The List of Adrian Messenger has been one of my favorite movies since I saw it on TV in the late 70's. The stunt casting is cute, but what I love is the atmosphere, the wonderfully low-key Brit George C. Scott plays, some of the fanciful police procedural stuff, and Kirk Douglas's perfect evocation of evil. And my chronologically first favorite Goldsmith score.

I agree wholeheartedly. It was a predictable, yet entertaining, three hours that really flew by. I have no desire to watch it again, but I think a lot of the hate comes from people who thoroughly enjoy trashing whatever is popular (along with the reasons you cited). I don't get why people devote so much energy to negativity. Defend that sub-par sci-fi, baby! Your comments ("predictable" "no desire to watch it again") are exactly why I find it perplexing that Avatar has been the highest-grossing film of all time. I don't care about the film's plot--exploitative corporate Hollywood railing against other exploitative corporations--or Hollywood's usual hypocrisy, but what was it that people--apparently everyone except me who saw the damned thing--found so fascinating about it? Were the effects groundbreaking, or is it a matter of it being Cameron's follow up to that boat movie and the hype being too big to ignore? I guess we'll never really know. I don't know about Nicholas, but as someone who is very critical of my entertainment I said it was okay, a good film, excellent in spots. To the average theater goer I'm sure they loved it. Remember the Transformers films made billions of dollars too! Also the 3D hype was also big at the time which lead to higher ticket prices. This was the film you had to see in 3D. ( I didn't)
