Came across this while channel surfing last night. The music sounded good in the beginning, (check!) , it had Emily Browning and Jessica Lucas (Check!) It's got that Snow dude from GOT's (check!), it's a disaster epic (check!). 30 minutes in and I'm watching a lame ripoff of The Gladiator. WTF?!

I recorded it for future viewing. Should I bother watching the rest of the film? Does it ever get into disaster movie mode? BTW its pretty violent for a PG-13 film too! I mean you can get away with a little of that stuff in PG-13, but not when the whole film is that graphic.

I love this film, and great score too! Yes, the disaster (obviously) kicks in after a while.

Yes its a fantastic film, better than spartacus, chinatown and the swarm. Wonderful, brilliant, great.
Wait, was this that pile of shite with kiefer sutherland as a nasty roman? Hand on heart I couldnt mischieviously tell my worst enemy to watch this tosh.
Its just Titantic but with molten lava.

Yeah, it's crap
If you watch it in Norway though, it comes pretty close to a terrific film.

But, to answer Solium, arguably this is actually a bit more honest and less smug than the troweled layers of 3 hour long Marvel movies.

Thanks for the responses. I've never been more gobsmacked by an opening of a film. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see a "Gladiator" story in a film called Pompeii. Talk about bait and switch.

I'm a HUGE fan of Paul W.S. Anderson in general, one of the foremost action auteurs of our time. I like pretty much everything he's done, except for two films (THE THREE MUSKETEERS and MORTAL KOMBAT). And EVENT HORIZON is one of the best films of the 90s, and a personal alltime favourite. Interestingly, I didn't know he had directed this when I went into the press screening back in 2014, I was totally taken aback by the quality of it -- which I didn't expect at all -- but then I saw his name in the credits, it all made sense. Great stuff!

The film got an honourable mention from me in 2014, right after the top 20 (of about 140 new films seen).

As for the score, I think this is Clinton Shorter's best work that I've heard. I like his work on THE 100, but I love the melodic Zimmer vibes he's going for here. Yes, certainly GLADIATOR-influenced, but among the good ones.

Oh yeah, no one tosses a "masterpiece" out like Thor. And worst yet, if you are going to go for Paul WS cheeze, his very finest WS Cheeze is in fact the stupidly costly, $75 million -Three Musketeers, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1509767/ - historical steam punk whizz bang. It is WS Anderson's Velveeta piece-de-resistance. And in the right mood, I enjoy it, although I have to confess my sins right after

I never said it was a masterpiece. Just a straight-up, excellent movie. All films that are within my top 30-40 every year are good movies.

It's good to know that one can express an opinion here without being ridiculed for it.

In fairness that does depend on the opinion.
If you wanna make fanciful claims with a tongue nowhere near your cheek, you gotta expect a bit of playful flak/pisstake/ridicule - whatever gets slung.

Kiefer Sutherland is fun in a campy turn as the film's villain (channeling dear old Dad), but that's about it for entertainment value. A dull mix of Gladiator, Titanic and Conan the Barbarian.

And you gotta love how the characters think nothing of engaging in score-settling fights as a friggin' volcano goes off around them!

uh, yeah, what Bill said, lighten up Thor, just admit your standards for what is a "good movie" are rather broad and generous, which is your right, but yes, you are going to be teased a bit about it after all. There are not too many people that will call this an "excellent" movie, you just have to be realistic enough to see that.

Oh, I'm well aware that Anderson's work in general is underrated and misunderstood, so reading disparaging remarks about his work; or about people who defend his work, is not particularly surprising. Just disappointing.
