Thor - it dont bother me mate but when you insist that a very very silly film is excellent ...you are only assassinating your own rep and judgment on here.

Why? Have you never liked something that isn't generally favoured by the masses?

Of course - but liking something that deep down you know is fairly silly is one thing - but claiming that its excellent is different.

No, I don't "know" that it's silly. I genuinely think it's a good film, as I do most of his output. His pace, staging of setpieces, lush cinematography are second to none, even if the story is clichéed. There are several fine, visionary 'action auteurs' who are able to transcend seeming B material by twisting and turning and adding their sense of energy and discrete, visual details to the proceedings; something that lifts it above your run-of-the-mill B movie. Paul W.S. Anderson is one such director. Other directors in the same category include Roland Emmerich, Neil Marshall, Michael Bay, Doug Liman, Jaume Collet Serra and so on. Several in the horror genre too.

Just because I see value in something that you don't, doesn't make my opinion 'silly' or deserving of ridicule.

Here's a review I wrote of POMPEII back in 2014 (it's in Norwegian, so you'll have to run it through Google Translate if interested): https://montages.no/2014/05/drivende-fortellerkunst-blaser-liv-i-pompeii/

Ive been to sweden and denmark. But not Norway.

Funnily enough, we had Pompeii on the coach dvd and as we started to drive thru denmark...the film began to get better. Once we were on the ferry to sweden i thought it was excellent. Possibly even made by an underrated and misunderstood but genius auteur director.

How odd! wink

..But not Norway.

Isn't that a double negative? Or is it following the conjunction rule of neither-nor ?

So the vast majority here (4 people) follow the ancient latin proverb, "Ixnay atching-way Pompeii."

So. It's officially confirmed.
Thor's been taking the piss since 1996.

Oh yeah, no one tosses a "masterpiece" out like Thor. And worst yet, if you are going to go for Paul WS cheeze, his very finest WS Cheeze is in fact the stupidly costly, $75 million -Three Musketeers, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1509767/ - historical steam punk whizz bang. It is WS Anderson's Velveeta piece-de-resistance. And in the right mood, I enjoy it, although I have to confess my sins right after

Is that the one where they ripped off The Wrath of Khan? Now it all makes sense. eek

Okay after a total of 21 hours on the job with five and a half hours of sleep I needed to vegetate so I decided to ride this one out.

To be honest as far as disaster films go it was watchable. I think it got better as it went along once I got past the premise. It had a brisk pace that helped alleviate the under-defined characters.

And I did like the characters no matter how cliched they were. Sutherland was a delight hamming it up as the villain. Though he eerily gave off his fathers persona.

Some of the score was very effective and there's some stunning effects work. Green screen isn't to obvious. Though the CGI horse chase was poorly done near the end. But all in all shocking how much worse CGI and green screen has gotten in just five years.

Silly stuff? Yeah. Fighting to settle grudges instead of running for your life. Villains always popping up conveniently when they should've been out of Dodge city by then. A volcano that seemed to have an on and off then on again switch. Dying standing up in an immortal kiss. Yeah romantic but unintentionally funny.

I've seen much worse make a hell of a lot more money at the box office.

Oh, I'm well aware that Anderson's work in general is underrated and misunderstood, so reading disparaging remarks about his work; or about people who defend his work, is not particularly surprising. Just disappointing.

I really enjoy love Anderson's stuff overall. The movies are usually highly entertaining as popcorn munching fun movies, even if they're not loved by the masses. His films always look good and he can stage some great action sequences. He needs better scripts to work from, but I'll always be willing to watch his stuff.

6/10

PMS Anderson's second best movie. I really like how bonkers it is, and that the ending went THERE. You're alright, movie.

Fourth best, IMO, after EVENT HORIZON, SOLDIER and the great debut film SHOPPING (gritty British working class hoodlums years before LOCK, STOCK....).

Here's my complete ranked list of his work, with grades:

Thor - did you ever see what Bill wrote about me giving Jason Statham films any score above 3/10? You got off VERY lightly!

Ha, ha...no, didn't see that.

Statham has done some good movies -- most recently MEG. One has to evaluate these things on their own terms.

Got an honourable mention from me last year (25th place out of 167). Tight, fun, unpretentious action flick with a high concept premise. Not quite on the level of its older brother DEEP BLUE SEA, but a definite genre highlight in 2018. Even beat out PHANTOM THREAD, CAPERNAUM, SICARIO 2, SUSPIRIA, LUCKY, ROMA and other critically lauded films....
