DESCRIPTION
La-La Land Records and Universal Studios proudly present the fourth title in the acclaimed Universal Pictures Film Music Heritage Collection—the world premiere official release of the original motion picture score to the big-screen 1977 horror chiller, The Sentinel, starring Chris Sarandon, Cristina Raines, Ava Gardner, Burgess Meredith and Martin Balsam, and directed by Michael Winner. Never before officially available in any format, renowned composer Gil Mellé’s chilling music is an expertly experimental mix of large orchestra and electronics that has earned its place as one of the great ’70s genre scores. Unnerving and horrific, tragic, yet somehow beautiful, Mellé’s work deepens the film with astounding dimensionality. Produced, mixed and mastered by Mike Matessino from multi-track studio vault elements, this special release is limited to 3000 units, includes bonus source and musical effects cues, and features exclusive, in-depth liner notes by writers Jeff Bond and James Phillips, with sharp art design by Dan Goldwasser.

Mellé, Gil

Gil Mellé's The Sentinel is a must have score for the collectors of Gil Mellé's rare corpus.
Previously, commercial labels gave us from Mellé:

Film Scores
The Andromeda Strain: The Album (Intrada Special Collection Volume 121, 1971, 2010)
The Organization: The Album (Intrada Special Collection Volume 144, 1971, 2010)
Borderline (Intrada Special Collection Volume 194, 1980, 2012)

Television Scores
TV Omnibus: Volume One* (Film Score Monthly Vol. 13-No. 13, 1962-1976, 2010)

https://filmscoremonthly.com/cds/detail.cfm/CDID/460/TV-Omnibus-Volume-One-1962-1976/

* Mellé’s two episode scores include one fairly traditional effort, “The Circle of Time” (this was before his electronic music breakthrough), and a more intriguing, jazz-based score written for only eight players (“The Forest Primeval”).
He adapted the latter into a 14-minute jazz suite (“Waterbirds”) for a rare 1970 LP Waterbirds.

Soundbites are really nice...Never saw the movie ,so I´m not familiar with any of the music. But I like what I hear.
Gil Melle is a nice contrast to the generic scoring. Thanks LALA

I think it's okay, in fact even "a good idea" to have separate threads for both releases, apart from the original announcements thread. THE SENTINEL is such an amazing score that it deserves a thread all to itself. I listened to the soundclips up on the La-La-Land site and was delighted to hear that they've included that great smoochy source piece as one of the extras. Sounds like Gil Mellé himself on baritone sax there. I loved all the brief source cues in the film. The Lipstick Commercial is just brilliant, and I recall liking the Shampoo Commercial too! That may sound nuts, but it's true. By the way, going on the (great) clips, there was quite a lot of music which I wasn't familiar with, and I know the film pretty well. Maybe dialled down in the movie or even rejected? And another thing - Don't base buying this CD on the clips alone - LLL seems to have highlighted the more scary/ moody bits over the grandiose moments, so all I'm saying is that there's a LOT more to this score than the brief snippets you'll hear in the soundclips. Again, that may sound like nuts (I mean, of course), but it's not uncommon for labels to highlight the only decent few seconds in their clips. That's when the score might not be that interesting overall. In this case THE SENTINEL is pure genius from beginning to end. Good credentials in the blurb (Mellé expert James Phillips et al). If this ain't the release of the year for me, I'm not me.

Maybe someone should start a separate thread for the Bear McC score, extracting it from LLL's initial announcement.

I agree with you. Besides, it is also practical for the index and search.

Keep in mind that, after Borderline, The Sentinel is the second original recording
for a film by Gil Mellé to be released on any formats. This needs to be underlined.

I like Gil Melle. I especially like his landmark Verve album Tome VI from 1968 featuring a traditional jazz quartet with Melle on soprano sax interacting with his own set of electronic instruments. I wish somebody would release it on cd.

If you do a search or look at nearby topics, there's an existing "The Sentinel" thread. I guess it's no fun to post in someone else's thread:

I just made my wife and daughter watch that Melle percussotron video over the weekend, and I had forgotten all about The Sentinel release!

Love the retro soundtrack LP vibe on the design - makes me think I used to see the darn thing in the used record stacks back in the day - in my dreams anyway.

"The Organization" was also taken from the original recording but the album was much too short though.

From his TV scoring there was of course the wonderful release of "Then Came Bronson".

We were lucky to get a Mellé title from Universal because of the old issue between Mellé and the Studio.

Now that people have started receiving their copies (mine will arrive this week I hope), do you all think it would be a good idea to post our reactions here instead of on the official announcements thread which is shared with the Bear McCreary release?

Me myself I personally would prefer to have all the comments about the new Mellé here, but Razzle Bathbone has already given THE SENTINEL a terrific thumbs up with his comments on the other thread, so that's a good start. I'll do what you tell me to do, mibbe.

I just watched this movie for the first time this weekend, and after 24 hours I still have zero idea what it was about. Incredible cast though, probably the best ever assembled for a horror flick.

Gil is not usually my taste but theres a couple of nice bits in the film; I actually rewatched the end because of that final piece (and seeing a 20 year old Nana Visitor helped)

Good heavens, she was apparently 18!
