Surprised this hasn’t been posted yet. Issac Hayes score gets the expanded treatment.

Technically there is no new material here, though it is the first time the album recording and film recording have been on a release together...

Definitely the same material that's in the Shaft Anthology FSM Box which is definitely worth getting despite missing
Shaft In Africa" which is a terrific score which was released by Hipp-O Select and now very hard to get. Good to see the song album and the score album paired up together for the first time, but it definitely isn't a Deluxe Edition if you want to catagorize it that way since it doesn't add anything new to it. Still nice to have without a doubt.

WTF is Softpak case???!

Think the Austin Powers Spy Who Shagged Me Special Edition version of the CD that came out 20 years ago in a pink plush material. I'll go with that example.

The Film Score Monthly set is far superior because it includes the score to the Shaft sequel "His Big Score", plus several scores from "Shaft, the Television Series" composed by Johnny Pate.
Johnny Pate is relatively unknown, but his adaptations of Isaac Hayes' themes for the TV series are of the highest caliber, and make for outstanding listening.
Buy the FSM set first-it's a gem.

I thought the end of the Varese Encores would be the end of reissues by Varese Sarabande, but now they do it outside the CD Club batches to make more space for proper Deluxe Editions.

Doesn't really matter if the FSM is superior, since it's is out of print! It's good that this is available for folks.

Interesting! The Varese page for the album says that the box set is out of print, guess they were wrong.

Well done Varese for releasing this Shaft Edition in a, 'Softipak'. At least now one can expect their orders to arrive without any Cracked jewel cases.

Softpak - aka ecopack/digisleeve/mini-Lp - is a paper cardboard sleeve crap without a cd tray.

Wow- great release.
That last cue of the film score is amazing- 8 minutes of suspense and then the propulsive climax resolving itself into the Shaft theme over the credits.

Does anyone know if the score album was remastered from the FSM release?

The soundtrack album was clearly remastered up from the Stax CD. There is more clarity, I think, and it uses more of the CDs inherent range without any of the brick-walling Varese has been known to do.
Is there any reason for me to keep the Stax CD?
