I was on YouTube watching some old 60's and 70's TV shows. I noticed how the opening and closing themes were considerably longer in duration and how music seemed (my opinion) to have a larger role in setting and maintaining individual scenes.
In terms of TV show openings, what is your favorite? It could be 50's-60's, it could be a current show. Non-vocal openings only. Jean Stapleton and Carroll O'Connor singing "Those Were the Days" doesn't count. An announcer mentioning the show's stars and show title is fine in my poll.

My favorite: The original Hawaii Five-O
For me: Lost in Space season 3, tied with Land of the Giant season 1.
I liked all the Star Trek ones. Pity that they don't have them these days as by cutting them out and running the end credits over the end of the program they can add another 1 minute or so of commercials in the hour.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (first season, 2nd version with the shadowy gunman firing [like in the pilot]). This is the show that got me interested in film scores. (I could tell you who scored which episode right from the beginning. By memory, mind.)
What a disappointment when Lalo dumbed the theme down to 4/4! I'm certain Jerry was furious.

But, when all is said and done, I suppose … you'll find it in bold.
Are we just asking what our favorite television themes are? We've done that plenty of times and there are countless great themes. Or is there something more to this thread, like how an opening theme pulls you into a particular show?

If it's your favorite, there's probably a reason. Maybe you want to be like the star of the show. Maybe you want to visit the locale where the show is based. Your reason is your reason. Maybe you just like the music. My favorite is Hawaii Five-O. Who wouldn't want to spend some time in Hawaii or get run over by a gun-carrying Zulu as Kono?

Well I do think having a reason other than "I like the music" makes for more interesting discussion. And going off of your Hawaii Five-O example my first thought is Newhart. Not only is the theme music serene and lovely, the opening scenery is beautiful and tranquil. Not only do I want to visit Vermont I want to move there.
