Was not a big fan of the Norwegian entry myself, but it no doubt had the most catchy refrain, which is why it got the most popular votes, but hardly any jury votes. Felt bad for Germany, which got ZERO votes in the popular round (haven't heard the song myself; I only tuned in after about entry 11 onwards), and the UK -- a country that has spawned so many great songs over the years (probably the country from which I like the most pop music) -- at the very last spot, was just sad. The Madonna performance was excrutiating. I thought for a moment the sour notes at the end of each verse line was intended in this sort of all-Gregorian alternative version, but it probably wasn't. The vocoder stuff in her latest song was also passé in 2001 -- which is bizarre, because she's always been good at following musical trends. Even though the idea of Madonna in a camp/kitch/'bad taste' Eurotrash environment like the Eurovision song contest sounds like a good idea (since her own philosophy is pretty close), this felt wrong on so many levels. Justin Timberlake's performance at the ESC a few years ago was leagues better.

Is this thread some kind of inside, secret thing? What event? What is this about?

The biggest musical event in the world, no less, with an estimated TV audience of about 200 million. But as usual, Americans are out of the loop. This is so true! But if Australia can join how come we haven't had that yanks do the same before now? Anyway I agree that though the UK entry was no great shakes in a Westlife kind of way, it wasn't the absolute pits some were and no way near the worst. Coming bottom was quite wrong. But Madonna! What happened? The second song was ok, mainly because it was new and didn't have her decades old recording to compare it with, but I couldn't believe how out of tune Like A Prayer was. She might have come away with a little more praise if she'd stuck to new stuff... But what IS that eyepatch about?

The Eurovision Song Contest was held in Israel yesterday and Madonna performed during the show. Thank you, Litefoot. One considerate person finally emerges.

Watched the entire show this year and had a blast. The songs were mostly crap, sure, but when has that ever been different? The "Grand-Prix Eurovision de la Chanson" (I just think the old French moniker was way cooler) has never been about good music. The very idea of countries competing with "pop" songs against each other is ridiculous, but a lot of fun. And Madonna... I really love her, she is a great pop musician, but her voice seems better suited to polished studio perfection... live, she was not particularly convincing, to put it mildly. (I'm not sure if she just had a bad day or that's just the way it is. Anyway, that's what Auto Tune is for. ;-) ) Thumbs down for Iceland for making political statements at the ESC. That is really bad form... in that way, the ESC is like the Film Score Monthly Discussion Forum. ;-) One of my favorite entries was from Australia, simply because they were the only ones floating on sticks. Voting system was pretty cool this year though, it stayed relatively close up to the end, unlike in some previous years, where the winner was basically already obvious before even half the votes were in. Altogether a great stage and show in Israel.
