SEASON 1:

Never seen it, don't know what I'll find, but Alan Silvestri is involved, so here I go...

Manimal (the pilot)
By: Paul Chihara
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lutslb0V6QM

Highlights:
  • 20:20 in.
  • 26:06 in. Some brief lulls in the cue.
  • 37:27 in.
  • 48:40 in. Joining a cue already in progress.
  • 53:05 in.
  • 1:01:35 in. "Jaws" homage!

Special Note: A score to the pilot done by Stu Phillips was rejected. As I wrote on my currently defunct Rejected Film Scores website about it (which is really just a recap of what the book ?torn Music says):
Doing a synth heavy score, the studio was displeased with the pilot and some reshoots were done and a new score recorded

Ironically, the replacement score is almost exclusively synth. Without having heard Stu's, it's hard to say who did the better score (score, not score in context of the episode).

Stu, if you are reading this, do you have tapes for your score? Just curious.

    "Illusion"
    By: Paul Chihara
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XG-P9iv19bs

    Highlights:
  • 4:40 in.
  • 5:54 in.
  • 7:30 in.
  • 21:05 in.
  • 25:48 in.
  • 27:24 in.
  • 31:30 in. Joining a cue already in progress.
  • 33:24 in.*
  • 38:47 in. Joining a cue already in progress.
  • 40:17 in. All the way to the commercial break.

    Plenty of drum machine.

    * = I've got it!!! The exciting new idea for a crappy TV series that will last half a regular season!
    "MacBirdgyver"!

Yes, just include shots of the bird with it's wings out and it can pick locked, disarm nuclear devices, and use an everyday paper clip to escape a prison!

    "Night of the Scorpion"
    By: Stu Phillips
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ8D14fnuXg (NEW link as of December 11, 2020)

    Highlights:
  • 1:52 in. The disco club source music.
  • 6:03 in.
  • 7:12 in.
  • 11:35 in. The steeldrum party source music.
  • 16:11 in.
  • 17:03/19:02 in. And after a short lull, the music that starts when the star transforms.
  • 25:49 in.
  • 32:45 in.
  • About 36:00 in.
  • 39:41 in. 41:04 in is when it gets cool (if you're impatient).
  • 42:47 in.

Mainly orchestral score. I assume there was no budget on the pilot for real players (but there was, however, a budget to hire a second composer!).

I guess they decided to give him a second chance, unless this was originally the second episode of the series and it was moved around.

About 3:10 in: I used to live in a house that had that same light cover.

    "Female of the Species"
    By: Alan Silvestri
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjbcZgRlGuA

    Highlights:
  • 4:50 in. So, Silvestri has to dive into the show, having gone threw two composers, and starting with an over six minute cue!
  • 11:40 in.*
  • 13:47 in.
  • 2519/2854 in.
  • 31:20 in.
  • 38:23 in. 44:00 in: kick drum shark music.

That's almost all of the score I cited.

The only way those guys could have been even bigger assholes is if they were all eating apples. [/CinemaSins]

    "High Stakes"
    By: Alan Silvestri
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7gKt9I6m-Q

    Highlights:
  • 2:23 in.
  • 5:47 in.
  • 13:25 in.
  • 14:31 in. Including car chase music.
  • 20:48 in.
  • 24:25 in.
  • 26:20 in. The first ten or so seconds sound like a different take on the opening of the "Star Trek" theme, then when the men are chasing the panther, the percussion sounds like the backing to the Marius theme to "The Twilight Zone". A four-minute cue.
  • 40:56 in. Detache string ostinato joined by some brass, then some pizzicato strings playing around with the ostinato idea which is followed up by some more of the string ostinato, and other instruments playing around with it. Then some action music with a moderate disco beat. A tad over four minutes.

That's almost all of the score.

Even here on this show, you could tell Silvestriwas ready nearly ripe for a big break.

    "Scrimshaw"
    By: Alan Silvestri
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipPCY2CCHL0

    Highlights:
  • 2:21 in.
  • 16:42 in.
  • 17:50 in.
  • 20:24 in.*
  • 32:48 in.
  • 38:14 in.+
  • 42:50 in.

    * = That's my kind of eccentric tinkerer -- sticking an eye loop magnifier to his forehead!

+ = there's so much wrong with that I could make a ten minute video about it and probably still not cover it all!

    "Breath of the Dragon"
    By: Alan Silvestri
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYBaOTMbI7M

    Highlights:
  • 10:07 in.
  • 21:34 in.
  • 25:38 in.
  • 29:08 in. You're hero shouldn't look hold an arm out like that -- it looks like he's going to transform into a Nazi.
  • 31:44 in.
  • 34:42 in.
  • 38:35 in. Strings, electric guitar licks, shaker and synths for an upbeat montage cue. That synth sound repeating sounds like the one from the Market Street cue from "Star Trek IV: The One With the Fucking Whales".
  • 42:42 in.

    "Night of the Beast"
    By: Alan Silvestri
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDxmqLYs8As

    Highlights:
  • 3:44 in.
  • 19:23 in.
  • 2731 in.
  • 31:55 in.
  • 34:24 in.
  • 36:13/37:48 in.
  • 41:17 in.
  • 43:43 in.
  • 46:11 in.

There has been no official release (or otherwise) of the show's scoring.

Quite frankly I'm shocked this made it to even eight episodes.

The spirit is willing, but the brain has become spongy and weak from all this shit. The next series will not have to on this level!

    Justin,

Several things to clear up. After the pilot of Manimal screened for the Network and Fox, it was decided that they didn't like anything. Actor, script, plot etc. However, Larson, with his magic touch for selling shows to networks, managed to convince them that with some changes he could make it work. So Glen went about changing things, including the score and theme (which of course he had his name attached to). I was actually very pleased to be off the show. When the ratings hit the bottom and Johnny Carson was making a nightly joke about the show, Glen jumped back into action and started a revision of the revision. He called me to say that part of the fault of the low ratings was "the music.." So he wanted me back to save the show. LOL. As we are aware, nothing could save that show.

Billy Hinche and I wrote the Automan theme. My in and outs from several of these Fox series was due to my unavailability, as I was scoring five seasons of The Fall Guy, and could not always meet the schedule.

    Thanks, Stu!

Yes, the problem with the show was not the music (though switching or mainly orchestral scores with Silvestri coming in, certainly did help).

I just might have to do "the Fall Guy"...

OMG this was amazing to read! The pilot was dire. There was an immediate change in cast and premise, with a prologue starting in episode 2 that gives Jonathan Chase a backstory not even hinted at in the premiere. Complete with Don Knight in an uncredited role as Chase's father. It was so over the top, I find it more fun to watch than the episodes themselves. I still found the series to be dumb fun, but then again, I am really undemanding in my 80's action/adventure. This was the decade of The A-Team, for God's sake. There was plenty of worse television on the indie stations.

The show was dire. I'm reminded of that Flanders' kid quote from an episode of "The Simpsons":
    "Ow, my freakin' ears!"

    Well, ow, my freakin' brain!
