The opening cue sounds a lot like Human Target, which is fine with me since I loved that score.

I saw the film (which teeters awkwardly between good and poor depending on the scene) and admired Bear's score, when I was able to hear it. It comes out nice and strong during the emotional scenes but is basically inaudible during the action (which is par for the course these days).

I gave it a ear, and very much like for "Godzilla king of the monsters" and "The Professor and the madman" I got so bored and disappointed.
I love his work in general but these last 3 soundtracks sound extremely uninspired and generic.
Is he taking too many assignments?

I noticed the same evolution with Alexandre Desplat when he was at his peak and almost scoring every big movie coming up. His work started to bore me due to too much recycling and uninspired cues.

Saw it last night.
It could have been a good idea, to bring back the "misfit boys versus Evil" movies from the 80's..I still treasure the Goonies immensely.
BUT you need writers and above all a director capable of empathy and sense of wonder.
A crude, frenetic, B-grade Michael Bay director like McG is most assuredly not that guy.
As it is, the movie is just another whack-bang-boom rollecoaster, with no light and shade.
The VFX are mostly ok, some grades above SyFy, but nothing to write home about.
The screenplay has problems, too: it's part of the format that the kids start annoying and then they "grow" through the adversities, but you need to know how to do it right..here, midway though the movie, I really wanted the alien to tear&devour at least 2 of them, because they are so insufferable.
The BMcC score contribution is not relevant as it could be, because in the action scenes it is pretty inaudible, drowned in the far back of the mix in favor of the explosions. Much better in the non-action scenes. The Endtitles sound pretty darn good , though.

I actually enjoyed this score. More so than Godzilla to be honest. There are some nice moments where he uses solo winds with sord Strings that harkened back to 90s kid dramas. The action material also had the same quality as his Cloverfield work in that the lines are all very clear and work well with each other. I had no issue hearing Bear’s score in the mix either.

I'm so tired of seeing teenage genre flicks every time I log on to Netflix, between this and SEE YOU YESTERDAY which were both released there recently. I know I'm getting old and weary, but I'd like to see more sci fi with proper adults in them. Is that too much to ask for?

There are no 'proper adults' in the world anymore.
Only dicks and bigger dicks!

I’m seriously loving this score. The finale and end titles cues really do it for me.

I'll check out the score, and his other recent efforts asap. McCreary is really one of the extremely few US film composers of his generation that's doing well at the moment. Everyone else is from abroad. Something to ponder.

Everyone is fixated on Godzilla, and nobody seems to be paying attention to this gem. Here's a quote from the composer:

"This movie was one of the most joyful experiences I’ve had as a filmmaker. The score and the film are such a homage to Goonies and Gremlins and Stand By Me, these are the things we talked about. The score is this adventurous big orchestral thematic score in the style of Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Danny Elfman, Alan Silvestri– I’m just drawing from all the things I grew up loving.

One anecdote about how important the score was to McG, Wonderland, and Netflix; they had made this really ambitious movie, spending all their money on the effects- VFX and practical. I’d read the script like a year before and loved it, they came to me and showed me the film for the score, but it was so clear it needed to be orchestral, but they didn’t have the budget to do it. I told them to hire me, that we’d cross that bridge when we came to it. They were talking synths, a more synth score, and I did some writing that I showed McG saying that I didn’t think in any way that film should have a synth score. And they quadrupled the budget for the score, because they realized that’s what it NEEDED. The movie was telling us what it needed to be, and you can’t fight the movie.

Fans of orchestral music, fans of thematic music, fans of any of the scores i just mentioned, are gonna like this. They really don’t make them like this very often, and I really hope it finds an audience. I got to work with two of my favorite people, and write a score that is my complete love letter to everything I love about film music."

I saw the film on Netflix yesterday. I found it largely disappointing. They were obviously going for the GOONES route, but I found several of the kids annoying (maybe it's just me getting old, I don't know) with plenty of references to other genre-defining films, like INDEPENDENCE DAY and JURASSIC PARK. Fairly entertaining, but not much more. McCreary's score was also rather generic.

I'm one of the few people on the planet who likes McG's TERMINATOR: SALVATION, but this was not his shining hour, IMO.

Different strokes, I guess. I don't find it generic at all. The main theme is quite catchy and given a workout.

I would agree with Nigel, I listen it a couple of times, pretty entertaining though and with a pretty fun main theme.

That endtitle is very, er, Explorers though, isn't it? Likely a well-intentioned nod to Jerry, but the whole film was like an Amblin Greatest Hits...

This movie was awful. I didn't much pay attention to the score so I'll have to give it a listen, but definitely so sitting through the movie again.
